Veterinary Surgical Technician – Legacy Animal Hospital – Goodyear, AZ

Classification: This is a nonexempt position under the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA)

Reporting Structure: The Senior Surgical Technician works under the direct supervision of the veterinarian. Recurring assignments are performed independently. Deviations or unfamiliar situations are referred to the supervisor with recommended solution(s).

Surgical Technician Objectives: The Surgical Technician fully assists the doctors to help improve the quality of care given to the patients and aids the doctors in achieving greater efficiency by relieving them of technical work at Legacy Animal Hospital. The Surgical Technician job duties encompass all the duties of the veterinary technician job description, but with a focus on surgery, administrative support to veterinarians and overseeing projects as identified.

This position requires a working knowledge of anesthetic monitoring, surgical techniques, pharmaceutical drugs, common diseases; their symptoms, means of transmission, treatment and prevention, and other administrative actions as required. This is an overview of the position and the job responsibilities listed do not encompass the entire position.

  • 8 – 10-hour Shifts Monday – Friday

Education and Experience:

  • Over 3 years of experience as a veterinary technician preferred
  • Proven knowledge and ability to handle multiple priorities

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

Technical

  • Exemplary skills in surgical preparation, scrubbing, procedure assisting, and anesthesia
  • Assure that monitoring and support equipment such as anesthetic machines, cardiac monitors, scopes and breathing apparatus are in good working condition.
  • Prepare patients and all necessary instruments and equipment for surgery.
  • Accurately prepare anesthetic according to pet’s weight and needs under the direction of the veterinarian. Have anesthetic machine and trach tube ready, if needed.
  • Assist doctor with surgery procedures, medicine and in/outpatient care.
  • Coordinates surgeon’s client and RDVM communication, prioritizes projects and activities as directed by the veterinary surgeon.
  • Dispense and administer treatments as prescribed by the veterinarian.
  • Monitor pet throughout recovery.
  • Prepare for multi-surgical scheduling and triaging for urgent surgical procedures.
  • Clean, maintain and sterilize all instruments, gloves, drapes and equipment used, keep instruments in top condition.
  • Follows all logging and electronic recording of patient records, client communication and RDVM interactions.
  • Receive, handle and treat patients with skill, compassion and care including: monitoring during anesthesia, administering fluids, assisting in diagnosing, surgery and general and specialized nursing care.
  • Accurately perform laboratory testing Obtain diagnostic radiographs.
  • Accurately and completely post all charges to client account.
  • Assist doctors or other team members, as needed.
  • Maintain all anesthetic machines, autoclave and any other equipment used in surgery.
  • Maintain inventory on all surgery and hospital supply.
  • Train the surgical technicians and surgical assistants.
  • Provides training of other team members as identified by supervisors or veterinarians.
  • Knowledgeable regarding related federal and state animal health laws and regulations including OSHA and DEA. Ensure that the hospital and its employees are compliant with regulations. Inform the Veterinary Hospital Administrator of any regulatory issues.
  • Basic Skills
  • Strong knowledge of anesthetic monitoring
  • Knowledge of the procedures used for receiving, treating, and scheduling patients, for ordering medical supplies, and requesting laboratory tests.
  • Knowledge of the use, care, and storage of veterinary instruments, materials, and equipment.
  • Knowledge of sterilization techniques to sterilize various instruments and materials.
  • Knowledge of the instruments, materials, and standardized procedures used in the full variety of treatments to make preparations and provide “tableside” assistance.
  • Knowledge of principles and processes for providing client and personal services. This includes client needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of client satisfaction.
  • Perform routine maintenance on equipment and determine when and what kind of maintenance is needed.
  • Ability to work independently on assigned tasks as well as to accept direction on given assignments.
  • Critical thinking – Understanding logic and reasoning to identify the strengths and weaknesses of alternative solutions, conclusions or approaches to problems.
  • Possession of strong organizational skills and proven success in completing a wide array of tasks as identified by the assigned doctor and management team.
  • Knowledge of the spelling and meaning of commonly used terminology of veterinary medicine to accurately record results of tests and file veterinary medical reports according to the veterinary software standards.
  • Understanding the implications of new information for both current and future problem-solving and decision-making.
  • Regular attendance and timeliness are essential to fulfill the requirements of this position.
  • Knowledge of hospital procedures and operating instructions for making appointments, assembling patient medical records, recording test results, relaying information regarding patient’s condition, and compiling and submitting data on patients treated
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
  • Ability to multi-task and work extended hours under stressful conditions.

Pay: $16.00 – $20.00 per hour
