Anderson is seeking a shelter veterinarian to join our mission-driven clinic team in either a full-time or part-time capacity. The ideal candidate will be proficient in the medical care of dogs and cats and will also have proficiency in the care of wildlife and non-dog/cat pet species. Candidates who lack experience with non-dog/cat species but who are interested in pursuing these competencies are also encouraged to apply. Typical duties, daily and weekly schedule are determined by current organizational and business needs, urgent medical cases, and veterinarian experience. This role supports our Director of Veterinary Medicine in a collaborative environment providing high-quality healthcare to our companion animals and exceptional service to our clients. Compensation commensurate with professional experience and interest in the organization’s plans for growth and expansion.

Overall Responsibilities

  • Provides safe, compassionate care and medical treatment to all animals in the shelter population
  • Administers diagnostic and preventative care to all animals in the Anderson population. Medical care of recently adopted animals is occasionally required
  • Triages and stabilizes urgent medical patients
  • Promotes and demonstrates safe practices in the workplace
  • Remains current on shelter industry animal care and medical developments to advance clinic efficiency and support exemplary animal care
  • Enhances the medical skills training of the Veterinary Assistants and Veterinary Technicians
  • Builds constructive and respectful relationships with staff, volunteers, adopters, fosters and community
  • Ensures full compliance with all municipality, county, state laws as well as policies established by Anderson’s Chief Executive Officer and Board of Directors
  • Is able and willing to work hours necessary for the successful operation of Anderson’s veterinary clinic and to advance its developing programs
  • Performs additional tasks as assigned

Job Qualifications

  • Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) required
  • License to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Illinois required
  • Current DEA license for controlled substances required
  • Previous surgical experience, knowledge of R+ handling, and Fear Free certification is a plus
  • High proficiency in diagnosing and treating a wide variety of illnesses and injuries
  • Experience and/or interest in treatment of other species (wildlife, aviary, equine, small mammals) a plus
  • Valid Illinois Driver’s License

Physical Requirements

  • Is physically able to walk, sit and/or stand for up to 10 hours at a time, and occasionally work high activity shifts of up to 12 hours at a time in all kinds of weather conditions
  • Is willing and physically able to work with domestic and wild animals with a wide variety of temperaments and species
