The Office of the Patient Experience at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics has an opening for a full-time Patient Education Specialist. The Patient Education Specialist develops and coordinates the activities of the Patient Education Program, including duties related to the creation, design, and revision of patient education and plain language communication within UI Heath Care. The Patient Education Specialist collaborates with diverse stakeholders to complete patient-facing and staff reference materials that will help enhance the patient experience and care delivery at UI Health Care.
Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
- Coordinates the daily activities of the Patient Education Program in order to maintain productivity, positive service reputation, and the timely completion of deliverables for its stakeholders.
- Provides expertise on patient education and plain language communication for patients, staff, visitors, students, and others throughout UI Health Care.
- Implements evidence-based practices in patient education materials and plain language communication.
- Assesses all internal and external patient education materials using HLA every three years.
- Participates in review, update, and maintenance of all patient education materials.
- Develops/maintains a system for hospital-wide tracking, inventorying, and scheduled review of patient education materials.
- Provides consultation and assists in the development of policies and procedures for patient education and plain language communication at UI Health Care.
- Promotes, educates, and encourages stakeholders to adopt best practices related to patient education and plain language communication.
- May participate in education and training of staff on health literacy and plain language communication.
- Maintains and monitors performance and productivity metrics to measure success of the Patient Education Program and other health literacy initiatives.
- Coordinate meetings and assists UI Health Care with the incorporation of plain language best practices.
- Serves as an advisor and resource to stakeholders for inquiries related to health literacy standards and best practices.
- Participates and assists with communication between UI Health Care and selected regulatory agencies, such as the Joint Commission, as it relates to health literacy standards.
- May coordinate usability testing of new patient education materials.
- Assumes special assignments as delegated by the Director of the Office of the Patient Experience.
- Maintains effective working relationships with faculty, staff, students, the public, and other stakeholders.
- Exhibits the professionalism expected of a professional, respected health care worker.
Percent of Time: 100%, full-time
Work Schedule: Some flexibility between the hours of 7:00 AM and 5:00 PM, Monday through Friday

Required Qualifications
- A Master’s degree in a healthcare-related field is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience is required.
- Demonstrated knowledge of best practices in plain language communication is required.
- 3 – 5 years’ experience providing patient education is required, either as a Health Educator, nurse, or clinician/provider.
- Demonstrated proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, including Word, Power Point and Excel is required.
- Demonstrated excellent communication skills, both written and verbal, are required.
- Demonstrated proficiency in professional writing is required.
Desirable Qualifications
- A current Iowa RN license is desired.
- MD or PhD is desired.
- Certified Health Education Specialist (CHES) certification is desired.
- Previous clinical experience in an academic medical center is desired.
