Epidemiologist 2 – Yale University – New Haven, CT

The Connecticut Emerging Infections Program (EIP) is a collaborative effort between the Yale School of Public Health and the Connecticut Department of Public Health (CT DPH), funded by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Along with nine other EIP sites and 4-6 additional state health departments, the Connecticut EIP conducts surveillance for hospitalizations associated with three viral respiratory pathogens: influenza (FluSurv-NET), respiratory syncytial virus (RSV-NET), and SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-NET). The Epidemiologist 2 will work under the supervision of the Viral Respiratory Disease Surveillance (VRDS) Program Manager to oversee and manage the daily activities of Connecticut’s RSV-NET project.

1. Provide high level and independent support to the EIP, a large, multi-project sponsored award, to ensure that all timelines and deliverables of the RSV-NET surveillance program are met.

2. Works collaboratively with federal (CDC) state (CT DPH) and local staff to develop and maintain a common multi-site protocol for RSV-NET surveillance. Participates in conference calls and face-to-face meetings with CDC, CT DPH, and other EIP site staff to discuss project procedures, including protocol and questionnaire implementation, study design, modification, and adherence, standardization of data collection and data entry, and analyses. This will require periodic travel to Hartford CT, Atlanta GA, and possibly EIP sites in other states.

3. Collaborates with the VRDS Program Manager and other VRDS team members to coordinate effort and share workload across all VRDS surveillance efforts to meet project goals, timelines and deliverables.

4. Prepares human investigations committee (HIC) protocols for Yale University, and the CT Department of Public Health for research proposals that build on the RSV-NET surveillance platform.

5. Responsible for the logistics of RSV-NET surveillance by providing clear communication of roles, responsibilities and task assignments to team members (staff and student research assistants) to ensure timely completion of project objectives and deliverables; assesses project needs and provides clear communication of such to the project manager.

6. Implements the common surveillance protocol for RSV-NET at all hospital-based and outpatient clinical laboratories serving New Haven and Middlesex Counties. This requires establishing and maintaining collaborations with laboratory managers and infection prevention staff at each institution, collaborating with colleagues at CT DPH, CDC, and the Yale EIP and overseeing EIP staff and students assisting with data collection at these institutions.

7. Ensures that medical chart abstractions are completed on all identified cases. This requires strong knowledge of medical terminology and experience conducting medical chart reviews.

8. Contributes to case finding, case auditing and data collection initiatives for RSV-NET.

9. Supervises project surveillance staff and student employees (including bachelor’s and master’s level students) and monitors progress and quality of work. Trains staff and students in project procedures and operations.

10. Oversees data entry into multiple project databases and monitors data quality.

11. Conduct ancillary epidemiologic studies as needed (case-control, cohort, survey, etc.) using data collected through routine surveillance in support of EIP’s VRDS activities.

12. Manages and analyzes data using statistical programs including, SAS and Excel. Oversees student analysis projects (internship or thesis).

13. Presents RSV-NET findings to community groups, public health professionals, university groups and at professional meetings and conferences.

14. Prepare reports for funding agencies including CT DPH and CDC.
