Medical Assistant (MA) – Calvin University – Grand Rapids, MI

Calvin Health Services is seeking a Medical Assistant (MA) to join this prestigious and growing multi-disciplined health care team, ranked among the top 20 campus health clinics in the country for the past ten years. This MA would work alongside other MAs to provide clinical support for our physicians, nurse practitioners, and physician assistants in delivering medical care to patients on Calvin’s beautiful campus. Schedule: Mostly 5 days per week during the academic year (September-April) when the office is open and typically 2-3 days per week during the summer. The office is closed for two weeks every Christmas break and for one week during Calvin’s spring break. The office is closed for all holidays and closed Mondays and Fridays in the summer months. This position is a 0.75 FTE position, and those hours are concentrated as (essentially) full time during the academic year but also cover some summer hours as noted above.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES

Responsibilities to include but not be limited to the following:


Patient Care:

Receive patients, obtain information, and enter into the electronic record regarding chief complaint, vital signs and reconciling medication list. Prepare patient and exam room for assessment or minor procedures and assist with the discharge of the patient by assisting the provider with dispensing of medications or planning follow-up care appointments. Perform clinical support functions such as: vision screening, giving injections (including vaccines), ear irrigations, peak flow testing, suture removal, phlebotomy, pulse oximetry, spirometry, electrocardiogram, obtaining in-house laboratory tests, and fit for crutches. All skills can be learned on the job and refresher training is provided annually and as needed. Maintain clinical areas, including maintaining equipment and performing infection control procedures. Assissting with patient phone calls using the protocol manual with oversight by the provider. This position is also responsible for assisting with scheduling referrals, entering medical information into EHR, processing lab, x-ray and other medical reports. As with any medical care facility, this position is obligated to maintain confidentiality and involves communicating sensitive information and in handling confidential information.


Laboratory:

Clean and prepare instruments for sterilization. Perform CLIA-waived tests as directed by clinical staff and document results. Draw blood specimens to be sent to hospital lab. Perform supportive administrative functions as directed by clinical staff.


SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES


EDUCATION and EXPERIENCE

Minimum of a current active Medical Assistant (MA) Certificate in Michigan. Experience using an electronic health record system is required. Someone with an active Licensed-Practical- Nurse (LPN) license in the state of Michigan with EHR experience may also apply.


OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES

4. Excellent computer skills and electronic record experience are both necessary.
