CENTRAL SERVICE TECHNICIAN-TRAINEE (100083)

POSITION SUMMARY:

Performs all duties pertaining to the Exchange Supply cart, Surgical/OB Case Cart Systems. Incumbents must become independently knowledgeable in all phases of Steam/ETO Sterilization and in the processing, cleaning, assembly, packaging and distribution/storage of all supplies, surgical instruments and patient use equipment for the support of the Operating Room, Nursing and all ancillary departments.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:

High school graduate or equivalent

Must take and successfully complete Central Service Technical Training course to become registered within 24 months of hire.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:

EXPERIENCE:

6 months experience with surgical instruments/implants.

6 months Central Service experience.

6 months clinical experience, i.e., EMT, CAN or ER Tech, Paramedic, Clinical Clerical Tech.

Prepare all materials for sterilization per department standards and adhere to proper techniques.

Mix chemical sterilants properly per manufactures standards.

Inspect all sterile supplies/instruments to ensure sterility in regards to event related sterilization per Infection Control standards.

Load sterilizer carriages to ensure steam/ETO penetration per department standards.

Document sterilization monitoring procedures per OSHA and Joint Commission standards.

Inspect storage cabinets for outdated supplies per department standards.

Assembles surgical case carts to include supplies, implants, instruments, and linens per department standards.

Rotate all supplies when placing on storage shelf per department standards.

Monitor distribution of supplies by giving all information needed to relieve inventory and charge patient per department standards.

Process all supplies, instruments, and equipment for offsite facilities per department standards.

Notify inventory control tech of all supplies that have become damaged or outdated per department standards.

Distribute supplies, instruments, and equipment per department standards.

Use all equipment per department safety standards and per equipment manual; Sterilizers, steam and ETO, cart washer, washer sterilizer, steam gun, aerator, ultrasonic cleaner, suction machine, SCD pump, wagenstein, heat sealer, computer, telephone, copier, calculators, box cutter, delivery carts, and gas chromatograph.

Wear proper dress to comply with clean and dirty work areas per infection control standards.

Communicate with appropriate personnel regarding deficiencies in supplies, instruments, and implants which will affect optimum patient care per department standards.

Respond in a timely manner when assigned to telephone per department standards.

Attend department staff meetings or reads minutes per department standards.

Must complete monthly departmental education with a score of 70% or better per department standards.

Demonstrates the following according to instrumentation departmental standards:

1. Proper care and handling

2. Accuracy in assembling of sets.

3. Performs quality control check.

4. Proper lubrication.

5. Storage locations maintain write-ups.

6. Proper cleaning of all types of instruments.

Perform quality check of instrument sets to ensure exact instruments are contained in sets and are clean per department standards.

Perform quality check of case carts to ensure exact items are contained in the cart before being sent to Surgery per department standards.

Perform quality check of par level carts to ensure exact supplies are placed on carts for use per department standards.

SKILLS AND ABILITIES:

Must be able to communicate both written and orally and possess the ability to understand directions/product information from technical journals/manuals.

Knowledge of and difference in steam and ethylene oxide sterilization per department standards.

Ability to communicate both written and orally and possess the ability to understand directions/product information from technical journals/manuals.

Knowledge of the types and differences in packaging materials per department standards.

Knowledge of storage locations for over 7,000 med/surg supplies, instrumentation and patient use equipment per department standards. – move to KSA

Knowledge of par level cart system per department standard.

Knowledge of principles and techniques of asepsis infection control standards.
