- Performs basic nursing care skills, i.e., vital signs, oxygen saturations, peak flow readings, ROM exercise and documentation in medical record.
- Observes patients to assist in identifying symptoms of physical or mental illness and report observations to MD or Registered Nurse.
- Performs under supervision intermediate level nursing care skills as outlined in the Standard Operating Procedure (SOP)/ Post Orders.
- Maintains 40-hours of in-service education per year to include all mandatory in-service and CPR certification.
- Assists and participates in orientation of new personnel and clinic health care workers.
- Performs duties in medical records, filing, making inmate appointments, purging charts, etc.
- Administers and observes medications for inmates as prescribed by the physician which includes delivery to inmate units. Accurately records administration of medications in a timely manner on the MAR (Medication Administration Record)
- Reports to the RN or MD symptoms, conditions, adverse reactions, and side effects of drug or medication interaction.
- Performs clerical duties as directed, i.e., maintaining/reviewing medical records, filing of medical Information and Orders to Report (OTR), etc.
- Participates in discharge/release planning by outlining health care needs; Provides instructions for health care needs (medication, treatments, available community services).
- Provides oral/written orientation of health services to inmates assigned to institutions.
- Coordinates inmate dietary requirements with the dietary department.
- Provides assistance with emergent medical care, codes and trauma/mass casualty situations, in accordance with scope of practice, SC Nurse Practice Act, and a directed by the medical provider and/or RN.

State of South Carolina minimum requirements:
Graduation from an accredited school of practical nursing and related experience. (Or an acceptable equivalency as approved by the Division of State Human Resources).
SCDC Minimum Requirements:
Must be licensed by the South Carolina Board of Nursing or qualifying compact state.
