Position Summary
The Registered Pharmacy Technician (RPT) provides assistance to licensed health care providers and dispensing practitioners. The RPT perform responsibilities required for the proper and safe dispensing process of medications, in the medical practice.

Essential Job Functions
Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions.

1. Obtains manufacturer sealed medications pill bottles for the licensed dispensing practitioner.

Provides such bottles to the dispensing practitioner, for the dispensing practitioner to review and provide them to the patients, after proper labeling.

2. Ascertains that each dispensed medication bottle is initialed by the dispensing practitioner prior to the medication being provided to the patient. Obtains the patient’s signature for each prescription being dispensed.

3. Cross checks with the dispensing practitioner all medications being dispensed against the patient’s allergy list to ascertain that the dispensing practitioner has identified all of the patient’s drug allergies.

4. Provides written instruction to patients on how and when to take any medication dispensed as directed by the dispensing practitioner. Note, the dispensing practitioner is to provide all medication counseling. RPT may not provide medication counseling.

5. Provides written instruction to patients on any potential side effects the patient may experience while taking the medication, as directed by the dispensing practitioner. The dispensing practitioner is to provide all medication side effect counseling to the patient verbally.

6. Maintains and coordinates the pharmacy inventory and does weekly orders, if necessary, after approval and review by the dispensing practitioner. Ascertains with the dispensing practitioner that no expired medications are kept in stock and that any medication that is about to be expired in the next 30 days is returned to the manufacturer and properly logged.

7. Keeps pharmacy dispensary well organized and all medication labeled in alphabetical order.

8. Maintain a digital and printed log of all medication that have been dispensed, discarded, packaged or returned to the manufacturer. Ascertains that the logs are signed by the dispensing practitioners on a daily basis. Maintains printed copies of all prescriptions properly organized.

9. Responds to patient inquiries through the telephone or online portal regarding medications being ready for pick up, but may not provide clinical advice.

10. Ensures that medications are available to the patients in a timely manner by reviewing medications due for refill reports and discussing with the physicians or nurse practitioners renewal of required prescriptions.

11. Assists in coordinating delivery of medications to patients by company drivers, when such patients are unable to come to pick up the medications refills at the dispensary due to an illness. Delivery of medications to the patient’s home must be discouraged and done only on an absolute necessity to maintain medication adherence by patients.

12. Maintains a clean and safe pharmacy/medication dispensary by complying with company’s procedures and government rules and regulations.

13. Participates in team based meetings, including the practice’s National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) Patient Centered Medical Home (PCMH) daily care team meetings with the dispensing practitioners and other members of the care team. Participates in pharmacy and therapeutics committee meetings.

14. Participates with the dispensing practitioner in the annual Board of Pharmacy audits by providing copies of all written records to the pharmacist inspector. Participates with the dispensing practitioner in any PBM audits.

15. Ascertains with the dispensing practitioner that all medications and records are secured and locked in the dispensing area.

16. Verifies medication dispensing eligibility for patients by doing point of care verification and verifying patient’s ID and verifying photographs on the electronic medical record’s patient registration page. Ascertains that any co-payments due by the patient are paid to the front desk associate.

17. Maintains the medical practice’s current dispensing formulary in the dispensary and ascertains that all dispensing practitioners in the practice have a current copy. Ascertains that all required licensed are posted in the dispensary/pharmacy area.

18. Assist the dispensing practitioner in any medication recalls by properly following the manufacturers recall instructions and properly documenting the steps required for the recall, including any patient notifications.

19. Maintains current license and continuing education hours that are required as part of the profession.

20. Assists in other duties assigned by the dispensing practitioner, as part of the dispensing process.

21. The RPT verifies that each health plan has a group ID in the IPHES CE2000 system before submitting any claims.

22. Correct and forward claims to third party payers.

23. Report adverse drug reactions.

24. The RPT verifies and prepares the claim report generated by the IPHES system and verifies the exported data exclusions before transmitting the report file to the CE-2000 application system to the

Physical Demands
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to work standing up, walk, remain in stationary position, ability to repetitive movement of hands and fingers; typing and writing. Must be able to exert regularly up to 10 pounds of force, frequently exert 30 pounds of force and occasionally exert 50 pounds of force to constantly perform the essential job functions. The employee will be frequently required to reach with hands and arms, bend, balance, kneel, crouch, crawl, stooping, push, and pull.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and ability to adjust focus. Frequent communication; verbal and written. Must be able to exchange accurate information; demonstrate skills in verbal communication and listening.

Required Education and Experience
1. High School or Technical school education.

2. Registered Pharmacy Technician

3. One year clerical experience or pharmacy supply experience

4. Any combination of education, training, and experience which demonstrates the ability to perform the duties and responsibilities as described including related work experience.

Preferred Education and Experience
1. Bilingual (English/Spanish)

2. Relevant or any other job related vocational coursework.
