The Sterile Processing Technician provides the Operating Room with the surgical instruments and supplies needed for surgery cases. Decontaminates, sets-up and sterilizes surgical instruments. Serves as a resource to physicians, nurses and medical staff in the Operating Room regarding surgical instruments and supplies.
Responsibilities
- Reviews and interprets O.R. surgery schedule on an on-going basis to determine priority of surgical instruments needed.
- Inspects, tests, assembles, packages and labels O.R. surgical instruments in preparation for sterilization.
- Ensures instruments are available and ready when needed for site specific and CPC trays.
- Assembles O.R. case carts.
- Maintains O.R. Sterile Stores and specialty service inventory.
- Prepares and delivers written inventories and requested supplies to the O.R.
- Decontaminates O.R. instrumentation and equipment.
- Prepares and uses solutions per manufacturer’s instruction.
- Follows O.R. and manufactures written policies and procedures.
- Operates mechanical ultrasonic cleaner and washer decontamination instrument.
- Performs leak testing and manufactures’ clean instructions of flexible Scopes
- Serves as a resource to surgeons, nurses and other medical personnel during O.R. procedures in the surgical suites regarding instrumentation needed on a stat basis.
- Demonstrates ability to provide care or service adjusting approaches to reflect developmental level and cultural differences of population served.
Required Qualifications
- Graduate of an accredited Central Service (Sterile Processing) Program OR
- Surgical Tech program within past 3 years OR
- Other health care related education that includes training in the principles, methods, and sterilization processes including care and handling of surgical instrumentation, sterile goods and equipment or
- 2 years work experience in Operating Room OR
- Successful completion of Fairview SIPT Paid Internship program
