Position Summary & Responsibilities


Position Summary:
The position (K0221130) The Kansas Department of Health and Environment is recruiting for the State Public Health Veterinarian position. Applicants must be licensed to practice veterinary medicine in Kansas by the State Board of Veterinary Medical Examiners. Applicants should also hold a Master or Doctoral degree in a public health field and have experience working in Public Health. Serves as team leader for specific programs and projects in the Bureau of Public Health Preparedness, the Bureau of Environmental Health, and the Bureau of Surveillance and Epidemiology. Conducts specialized and complex work assignments, and helps to establish priorities and coordinate activities of program epidemiologists, research analysts, and other staff. Consults with senior staff to assist with resource planning and prioritization.

Job Responsibilities may include but are not limited to the following: Plans, conducts, and directs special projects related to preparedness, including infectious disease issues, and environmental health. Oversees study and project design and implementation, and conducts advanced analyses of data and information for a variety of public health uses, including program evaluation, planning, and resource development.

Qualifications

  • Education:
    • High School, GED
  • Licensing & Certification:
    • Valid Driver’s License – Incumbent is required to have and maintain a valid driver’s license when operating a state vehicle, a private vehicle, or a rental vehicle for the benefit of the State.
  • Minimum Qualifications:
    • 1) Master’s degree with a focus in epidemiology with 4 or more years work experience in applied epidemiology; or 2) Doctoral-level epidemiologist with at least 2 years work experience in applied epidemiology; or 3) Other non-epidemiology professional degree or certification (e.g., RN, MD/DO, DDS/DMD, DVM, PhD, RS) with specific epidemiology training (e.g., MPH degree, CDC Epidemic Intelligence Service program) and at least 2 years epidemiology work experience.
    • Able to obtain and maintain veterinary medical license in Kansas.
  • Preferred Qualifications:
    • MPH or equivalent
    • Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Access, SAS or other stat
    • Proofreading, editing, attention to detail
