Responsibilities

Job Summary

Independently collects, abstracts, enters, and reports relevant trauma data elements according to guidelines established by Trauma Services, Arizona Department of Health Services, National Trauma Data Bank, and the Trauma Quality Improvement Project. Performs specific case findings by reviewing and analyzing health records and various database systems related to duties.

Contributes to the efficient operation of the trauma registry through collection of required data elements, coding of clinical conditions and external causes of injury.

Performs case findings by reviewing, analyzing, verifying patient information including medical charts, laboratory reports, and x-ray reports.

Abstracts, assembles, enters and codes clinical data into computer database by using the Association for the Advancement of Automotive Medicine Abbreviated Injury Scale (AIS) and the standardized registry criteria as defined by regulatory agencies and quality related organizations.

Coordinates required, routine, and specialized reports.

Assists in the analysis of the focus studies and the TQIP quarterly benchmarking report.

Extracts, interprets, analyzes benchmark data, and prepares presentations of such information in easy-to-understand and accurate manner.

Supports performance improvement, injury prevention and research data needs.

Functions as the main point of contact with the data base vendor and hospital IS Department to maintain and improve registry functionality.

Coordinates activities to initiate, maintain, and enhance system functionality, interface and upgrade.

Examines workflow opportunities and makes recommendations for streamlining processes as well as improvement in overall data operations.

Enhances trauma registry database by working with key stakeholder in internal and external environments to customize features that will benefit workflow.

Assists in the timely preparation/submission of data to regulatory agencies, e.g. AZ DOH, as well as other quality and or benchmarking submissions, NTDB, TQIP, etc.

Retrieves missing data elements from necessary sources and ensures info entered into the trauma registry database is complete.

Develops and maintains trauma registry database by working with key stakeholders in internal and external environments to perform trauma registry functions.

Resolves routine coding issues/problems and appropriately seeks assistance from Trauma Program Manager, Trauma Quality Analysts, and other identified specialists as indicated.

Assists in maintaining a system by which data and written requests are processed in a timely and accurate manner.

Generates trauma registry reports on required timeline or as requested to support trauma program research, performance improvement, injury prevention, and financial performance.

Participates in performance improvement activities to ensure accuracy of data collection and timely submission of data according to the requirements of the State of Arizona Trauma Registry and the American College of Surgeons.

Reviews necessary data and special reports to ensure the capture of all injured patients meeting trauma registry criteria and those meeting criteria for specialty codes.

Participates in trauma meetings, work groups and educational conferences in order to maintain and expand Trauma Registry knowledge base.

Performs data quality control and validation of registry data.

Communicates with data base vendor and hospital IT department to maintain and improve registry functionality as request.

Qualifications

Education

High School Diploma or GED Required

Experience

2 years experience in health related field/hospital setting with data entry and/or analysis

Knowledge of Medical Terminology, Registry or Coding

Required

Other Knowledge of health related field

Computer skills; data entry skills; data analyst skills
