Definition
Under supervision of the Fire Chief, manages and directs the operations of the District’s wildfire prevention programs. Program areas include property defensible space support including managing defensible space inspection and green waste programs; managing forestry and fuels reduction programs on larger lands in the WUI and early fire detection, public notification and evacuation planning activities in coordination with other agencies.

Distinguishing Characteristics
The Fire District voters have established an annual $3.7 million dollar revenue source through a special property tax passed in September 2021 dedicated to wildfire prevention work like fuels reduction in the WUI. The money can’t be taken by the State or County.
This individual serves as the leader/manager of a newly created division with programmatic, environmental and managerial duties, and who also hires and supervises a small staff and contractors and engages with the community members/organizations, land managers and other stakeholders.
The incumbent is responsible for a variety of wildfire prevention programs, projects and special assignments and performs essential functions as well other duties as assigned.
Incumbents are expected to work independently and exercise good judgement and initiative. This position is an Exempt position and is assigned to a 40-hour work week.
This position may classify as a “Miscellaneous” or “Safety” position based on experience and qualifications for the purpose of benefit calculations.
Incumbents must be able to work in a standard office environment which requires the ability to exert a small amount of physical effort in sedentary to light work. This would involve moving around an office setting. Requires sufficient hand/eye coordination to perform semi-skilled movements such as writing, filing, typing, using a computer, and other office functions. Incumbents must also work in the field with subordinates, peers, supervisors, stakeholders, contractors and citizens. The work is sometimes in the wildland walking on uneven and non-paved surfaces with slope, snow, vegetation in variable mountain weather at elevation. Incumbents should be reasonably fit.
