Medical Assistant – Midland Health – Midland, TX

Job Description: The Medical Assistant is responsible for participating and assisting in the care of the patient, under the direct supervision of the Health Care Provider and in collaboration with the healthcare team. The Medical Assistant is responsible for taking the patient’s history, assisting with administering injections, examinations and procedures as trained. The Medical Assistant performs both administrative and clinical duties to support and represent the Providers and the Organization in a professional manner. Medical Assistants are instrumental in helping patient’s feel at ease and often explain the Providers instructions as directed.
SHIFT AND SCHEDULE
Full Time Monday-Friday 8:00A-5:00P
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS/PERFORMANCE EXPECTATIONS

1. Provide exceptional customer service to our patients in an environment that promotes their rights, dignity, freedom of choice and individuality.
2. Recognize obstacles and notify patients of wait time.
3. Collect patient information. Review medical histories, current allergies and medications. Obtain and record patient’s vital signs: temperature, pulse, respirations, blood pressure, weight and height. Report assessment findings to the practitioner and record appropriately in a timely manner.
4. Assist patients to exam room and prepare patients for examination. Assist patient in wheelchairs to and from exam table, procedure table, and scales utilizing proper body mechanics and safety measures.
5. Organize patient care activities based on assessment findings.
6. Assist practitioner in identified patient procedures, treatments, and examinations.
7. Assist the provider with preparing injections, cast application and removal, suture removal; prepare prescriptions, and durable medical equipment application as directed and authorized under state licensure.
8. Other clinical duties may include but are not limited to: Collecting and preparing laboratory specimens, performing basic laboratory tests, instructing patients about medications and special diets, authorizing prescription refills as directed, drawing blood, taking electrocardiograms, and removing sutures and changing dressings as directed and authorized under state licensure.
9. Provide appropriate patient education, health information materials and community resources lists as directed, and maintain educational supplies. Identify patient’s need for additional information, and refer to appropriate healthcare resources.
10. Order, stock, and maintain exam room and clinic area with standard levels of supplies, medications, linens, forms and equipment. Recognize patient care trends affecting unit supplies and notify clinic manager.
11. Operate clinical equipment according to equipment procedures. Regularly check clinic area and rooms for any malfunctioning equipment and general maintenance problems. Report findings to appropriate person.
12. Perform related tasks, which include requests for prescription refills, responding to phone calls, taking and relaying messages, and directing patient flow. Facilitate communication between the patient and the provider.
13. Administrative duties include but are not limited to: using computer applications, answering phones, greeting patients, updating and filing patient medical records, coding and filling out insurance forms, scheduling appointments, arranging for hospital admissions and laboratory services, handling correspondence, billing, and bookkeeping.
14. Participate in staff meetings and provide input, utilize problem solving skills, and provide resolutions in order to assist in creating a positive work environment.
15. Performs other related duties as assigned for the purpose of ensuring the efficient and effective functioning of the organization.
16. Adhere to all of the centers standard policies and procedures including HIPAA, infection control, fire and safety, human resources, and departmental procedures.
17. Maintain strictest confidentiality.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills and/or abilities required:

  • This position requires knowledge of clinical standards, practices, and procedures.
  • Advanced communication skills; able to effectively relate via the telephone and in-person to serve the needs of the patients, clients and visitors in a manner that is efficient and productive.

DESIRED SKILLS

  • Orthopaedic Medical Assistant experience is preferred.
  • Nationally recognized certification is preferred.
  • Bi-lingual is preferred.

SUPERVISORY RESONSIBILITIES: This position has no supervisory responsibilities.
DIRECT SUPERVISION: This position reports to the Office Manager.
WORK ENVIRONMENT: The employee is occasionally exposed to a variety of patient conditions and elements. The employee may be exposed to fumes or airborne particles and some mechanical equipment. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is exposed to a variety of patient conditions and elements including biohazards, potential exposure to bodily fluids, as well as communicable disease. This position requires the ability to respond quickly to varying demands from the provider and patient The noise level is moderate to quiet.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS: The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. Work may require standing and walking for long periods of time. This position requires occasional bending, kneeling, stooping, crouching, and crawling. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, and color vision. Requires good manual and finger dexterity to operate equipment and to write.
