Laboratory Assistant, Core Lab (DLS Oahu) – The Queen’s Medical Center – Oahu Island, HI

SCHEDULE

Regular Full-Time Position

Must be available Monday through Friday from 3:00 pm to 3:00 am and Saturday to Sunday from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm.

Must be flexible with schedule changes to meet operational needs.


JOB SUMMARY

1. Performs some or all of the following tasks, as assigned:

1.1 Accessioning (data entry)

1.2 Processing of specimens

1.3 Clerical activities

1.4 Breath Alcohol Testing

1.5 Forensic toxicology urine and blood collections

1.6 Point-of-Care and/or waived testing as approved by the Medical Director.

2. Performs departmental duties as assigned.


DUTITES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

1. General

1.1 Operates laboratory computer systems and performs necessary tasks, which may include the following:

1.1.1 Prints labels, lists, reports, worksheets, etc. for use or distribution.

1.1.2 Accessions orders into computer system.

1.1.3 Performs edit checks.

1.1.4 Uses various functions on computer system to resolve problems and extract pertinent information.

1.1.5 Enters patient demographics.

1.1.6 Enters and/or reviews special instructions and information regarding specimens.

1.2 May obtain and/or verify pertinent patient information for laboratory testing and/or billing purposes.

1.2.1 Verifies information on requisitions for accuracy; obtains information as needed to ensure completeness.

1.2.2 Verifies identification of specimens.

1.2.3 Acquires and/or verifies appropriate authorization and/or signatures on requisition forms.

1.3 Answers telephone, receives and relays messages which may include messages regarding specimen pick-up, laboratory reports, test orders, etc.

1.4 May operate lab equipment such as but not limited to centrifuges, vortex mixers, etc. Performs regular maintenance of equipment, as assigned.

1.5 May perform Point-of-Care and/or waived testing as approved by the Medical Director and as necessary by a waiver from the Department of Health for the specific testing site.

1.6 Maintains files and retrieves material according to established systems and procedures.

1.7 May sort and check overall presentation of report forms and/or ancillary documents prior to distribution.

1.8 Monitors and processes documents via fax, including but not limited to reports and requisitions.

1.9 May handle payments for laboratory services.

1.10 Monitors and orders routine supplies required to perform duties.

1.11 May fill supply requests from satellites and clients.

1.12 Works with clients and/or departments to resolve problems.

1.13 Sorts, processes, and/or routes specimens to various departments and for transport to other locations.

2. Accessioning

2.1 Sorts, processes, and/or routes specimens to various departments and for transport to other locations.

2.2 Verifies receipt of specimens in lab computer system, including interfaced lab orders.

2.3 May assist with processing of send out specimens

3. Microbiology

3.1 Assists technical staff with non-technical processes as specified by the supervisor or manager.

3.2 LAI: Performs specimen processing.

4. Satellites

4.1 Sorts, processes, and packs specimens according to established procedures and IATA regulations for transport to other locations.

4.2 Performs Breath Alcohol tests in accordance with applicable federal and state requirements.

4.3 Performs collection of forensic toxicology urine specimens following federal and state requirements.

4.4 Performs courier duties.

5. Forensic Toxicology (as applicable)

5.1 Breath Alcohol Testing

5.1.1 Performs Breath Alcohol tests in accordance with applicable federal and state requirements.

5.1.2 Processes and distributes breath alcohol documents

5.1.3 Interacts with designated client contacts regarding positive breath alcohol results.

5.2 Forensic Toxicology specimen collection.

5.2.1 Collects forensic toxicology urine or blood specimens following federal or state requirements.

5.2.2 Performs same-sex observed urine collections as assigned.

5.2.3 Signs affidavits and handles inquiries from clients and donors.

6. Supports organizational performance and strategy by providing information and contributing to quality improvements as appropriate.

7. Observes all safety and health regulations in accordance with DLS safety policies and procedures. Reports unsafe actions/conditions and injuries to supervisor promptly.

8. Identifies and analyzes problems; makes decisions and takes appropriate action(s).

9. Assists internal and external customers with questions, concerns, problems, etc.

10. Maintains a positive work climate and effective working relationships with internal and external customers.

11. Maintains attendance as scheduled/assigned, consistent with DLS policies and procedures.

12. Attends and/or participates in activities such as but not limited to meetings, required in-service programs, continuing education and competency assessments.

13. Models the behaviors consistent with the mission, vision and shared values of the organization.

14. Maintains confidentiality of information in accordance with company policies and procedures.

15. Performs other duties as required.


JOB DEMANDS


Communication Demands:

  • Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Able to write routine reports and correspondence.
  • Able to effectively communicate information to internal and external customers in informal settings such as one-on-one and small group settings.
  • Lab Assistant II: May be required to conduct training for peers.


Typical Physical Demands:

  • Requires manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination.
  • Requires clear vision at 20 inches or less and ability to identify and distinguish colors.
  • Requires corrected hearing to normal range.
  • Requires wearing of personal protective equipment (PPE) such as, but not limited to, gloves, lab coats, and face shields.
  • Performs occasional lifting, carrying, pushing or pulling of supplies weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • May perform the following activities on a continual or intermittent basis:

a. Standing or sitting up to 4 hours

b. Typing/keying up to 2 hours

c. Bending up to 2 hours

  • May require distinguishing and identifying colors.
  • May require occasional lifting and carrying of supplies weighing up to 35 pounds.
  • May require repetitive manual motion such as but not limited to pipetting, capping and uncapping specimens.
  • May require frequent walking and/or driving to various locations.


Typical Working Conditions:

  • Work environment includes conditions common to a hospital/laboratory environment, including working directly with biohazardous materials, potentially hazardous chemicals and patients with communicable diseases.
  • Generally works in an indoor, air-conditioned area.


QUALIFICATIONS


Education:

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Academic background with courses in mathematics and some biological sciences preferred.


Experience:

  • One-year patient care, medical laboratory, or equivalent public contact experience preferred.


Skills:

  • Ability to work effectively both independently and with a team
  • Ability to communicate effectively in English, both in verbal and written form
  • Excellent customer service skills
  • Typing: 96% accuracy at 30 wpm, as applicable.
  • 10-key: 96% accuracy at 7,000 ksph, as applicable.


Other Qualifications as applicable:

  • Must possess a valid State of Hawaii (or equivalent) motor vehicle license and a current, acceptable traffic abstract.
  • Must meet additional requirements of contracting agencies, such as obtaining a security clearance.
