Engineering Manager – Nordstrom Styling Engineering – Nordstrom – Chicago, IL

Engineering Manager – Nordstrom Styling Engineering

Job Description

Nordstrom is looking for an Engineering Manager to join our Styling Engineering org. As an Engineering Manager in the Styling Engineering org, you will help create capabilities focused on customer styling. If you love thinking about how to manage people, process and projects while being an inclusive leader, then we’d love to speak with you.

The scope and accountability at this level is typically responsible for managing a team of 4-6 people while working closely with Program Management, Product Management and UX Design. Our engineering teams work across our entire stack – from cross-cutting user interface and back-end code to infrastructure. There are three pillars to the role: people, process, and projects.

People: As an Engineering Manager, your primary goal is to empower and grow your engineers. You will emphasize the importance of learning, urge others to build new skills, and provide opportunities for them to develop. Our Engineering Managers recognize the importance of forming a team with an appropriate and diverse mix of styles, perspectives and experiences. They champion the decisions of the team and operate in a way that builds a sense of belonging for everyone.

Process: As an Engineering Manager, you are responsible for ensuring your team can deliver with confidence. As an owner of the “how,” you will help set team, technology and process strategy to ensure alignment with present and possible future business needs.

Projects: As an Engineering Manager, you will take ownership of designs that span multiple people’s work, breaking work into smaller tasks for more junior engineers to support. You will develop appropriate technology and business metrics/KPIs. You will guide the team’s technical roadmap over multiple product planning cycles year over year. Our Engineering Managers utilize metrics to make strategic decisions to shape future planning roadmaps.

Read this first: Research shows that while men apply to jobs when they meet an average of 60% of the criteria, women and other marginalized folks tend to only apply when they check every box. If you think you have what it takes, but don’t necessarily meet every single point on the job description, please still get in touch. We’d love to have a chat to see what skills/experience you are able to bring to this team.

  • You understand business and customer needs and can describe and influence tradeoffs in design, component choice, databases, and other system-level decisions and communicate reasons to team.

  • You have experience setting appropriate guidance and expectations as it relates to the planning process and selecting timelines.

  • You apply data and knowledge to inspire engineers to invent, evolve, improve and simplify.

  • You are comfortable providing useful feedback during systems, network, and code reviews and when reviewing work output across the team.

  • You demonstrate accountability for performance of feature work.

  • You ensure your work and that of your team members follows the engineering and security standards.
