Medical Assistant – Avance Care – Morrisville, NC

Job Purpose: To facilitate the flow of the office by acting as a liaison between the physicians and patients by working directly with the physician to provide high quality customer service and clinical care.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities
General:

  • Maintains confidentiality of patient information as regard to HIPAA laws
  • Performs any administrative or clinical duties as requested by the provider
  • Displays excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Meeting/Greeting/Assisting patients promptly, efficiently and in a professional manner
  • Responsible for obtaining, verifying, and inputting all information accurately in the system
  • Answer telephones promptly for nurse calls

Clinical:

  • Escorts patients to and from exam rooms, physician offices, and treatment rooms as appropriate
  • Records patient data prior to each physician’s visit, including but not limited to, vital signs (temperature, pulse, blood pressure, respiration), height, weight, head circumference, allergies, and medication changes
  • Obtains all necessary patient records as required by physician and verifies presence of consent prior to treatment or procedures
  • Prepares and stocks exam/treatment rooms and orders supplies as needed while maintaining room disinfection protocols and making sure medical supplies are not outdated (examination rooms should be inspected in the morning and afternoon or evening).
  • Assists physicians with exams and procedures
  • Assist with delegated patient education activities including but not limited to distributing education literature
  • The following as requested by provider:
  • Perform venipunctures and necessary laboratory work
  • Administers subcutaneous and intramuscular injections
  • Performing dipstick testing and UCG tests
  • Performing visual acuity testing, visual field screening, hand-held audiometry and tympanometry
  • Placing leads and running electrocardiograms
  • Applying oximeter and recording reading
  • Administering oxygen therapies per mask and nasal cannula as prescribed
  • Collecting and labeling urine/sputum specimens
  • Preparing patients for examination or procedures including positioning, draping, shaving, and disinfecting treatment sites
  • Performing x-rays
  • Removing cerumen impactions
  • Cleans, wraps, and autoclaves surgical instruments
  • Performing peak flow studies and spirometry
  • Removing sutures or staples from superficial wounds
  • Performing skin tests
  • Applying basic dressings
  • Removing old dressings and applying a new one if appropriate, but only after a physician has made the assessment
  • Administer medications orally, vaginally, and rectally, subcutaneously, intramuscularly, and intradermally. Administering prescribed drops to the nose, eye, and ear, applying antibiotic ointments to the inside of the lower eyelid
  • Removing casts, splints, and other external devices
  • Measuring for crutches and crutch teaching
  • Returns all patient telephone calls in a timely manner
  • Creating and updating telephone encounters (TE’s)
  • Distribute proper medications as ordered by the provider
  • Phones in prescriptions and makes other patient calls as directed by provider
  • Schedule patient tests, procedures, and hospital admissions and scheduling appointments to follow-up on tests results, as applicable
  • Completing all forms used by the provider in providing services accurately (growth charts, WIC forms, MPE) as well pap forms, cytology-pathology forms, etc
  • Informing and updating the patient regarding delays or when a provider has to leave
  • Removing equipment from the rooms and closing the doors at the end of the day

MA Enhanced Skills (location specific)

  • Accomplishes all tasks as assigned or become necessary
  • Ensuring that medication refills are submitted per Avance standards
  • Monitoring documentation of Telephone encounters per Avance standards and Provider discretion, and workflows
  • Documentation disposition
  • Clinical support for the following but not limited to
  • Scribing
  • Structured HPI data and Template management
  • IV Therapy
  • Diabetic foot exams
  • Device implantation
  • Injectable education
  • Assists with new pilots and roll outs

Additional Duties and Responsibilities

  • Accomplishes all tasks as assigned or become necessary

Qualifications
Experience, Education and Licensure:

  • High School Diploma or Equivalent
  • Associates Degree in Medical Assisting, preferred
  • Must hold one of the following or similar qualification:
  • Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA)
  • Certified Medical Assistant (CMA)
  • Graduate of Medical Assisting Program (MA)
  • Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)
  • Emergency Medical Technician (EMT)
  • 1-2 years’ experience, preferred
  • Avance Care Competency Check
  • Medication Knowledge Assessment
  • Vaccination Knowledge Assessment
  • All clinical tasks directly involving patients are allowed only after a competency check, formal approval by the supervising physician, and after an order from the on-duty provider.
