SUMMARY: This position is responsible to the Director of Athletics, with direct supervision by the head track and field coach, for providing coaching expertise in the area of throwing; leadership for the administration of the intercollegiate track and field program; assisting the head coach in the effective management and administration of all aspects relating to a positive and beneficial intercollegiate experience for student-athletes; and performing other related duties as assigned.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned.
Assists in coaching student athletes in the throws program of track and field, which includes evaluating their performance in both practice and competition, teaching fundamental techniques and providing leadership and instruction, as directed by the Head Coach.

Teach sportsmanship and set an example of good moral and physical behavior for the student-athletes in your charge.
Maintain standards of performance consistent with departmental academic and athletic expectations as reflected in the mission statement, goals, objectives, departmental guidelines, and performance appraisal procedures.
Assist the head coach in the organization and supervision of practices and athletic events.
Assist in implementing a successful recruiting program to attract outstanding student-athletes to attend Mesa State College.
Conduct all aspects of the program within the rules, regulations, and procedures of the conference, the NCAA, the departmental policy manual, and the college.
Attend and participate in department and staff meetings as requested/required.
Coordinate and implement with the head coach eligibility requirements to ensure full compliance with governing rules and regulations, proper administration of financial aid for both prospective and enrolled student-athletes, facilities scheduling, and contest administration and game operations as necessary.
Communicate regularly and maintain a positive and constructive working relationship with support staff in sports information, student services, sports medicine, campus recreation, business office, facilities/operations, compliance, athletic advancement, marketing, and ticket office, to assist in implementation of an efficient and effective program and department.
Engage in fund-raising activities for the program in conjunction with the head coach, athletic advancement and its representatives.
Represent the college at professional meetings, alumni gatherings, campus activities and civic affairs as requested by the head coach.
Encourage an effective outreach program with student-athletes that provides benefit to the on and off-campus community.
Maintain, as appropriate, effective relationships with parents, alumni, friends of the program, and others toward the positive image and promotion of the program.
Remains in full compliance with NCAA, University, and Rocky Mountain Athletic Conference rules.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIESThis position reports to the Head Track and Field Coach and must subscribe to the Performs under general supervision. Determines own methods of performing assigned work. Supervises graduate assistants, interns and student workers.

Bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university
Two years successful competing or coaching experience in throwing
Must have knowledge of NCAA rules and regulations
Demonstrated knowledge of basic principles of throws coaching/team supervision
Demonstrated ability to effectively coordinate recruiting activities
Experience promoting team discipline and instill proper ethical and moral standards
LANGUAGE SKILLSAbility to effectively present information, both orally and in writing, and to respond to questions from team members, groups of recruits, athletes, students, supporters and the press. Ability to read, analyze and interpret technical instructions, manuals and periodicals.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLSAbility to perform basic mathematical functions and calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, proportions and percentages as related to fiscal management.

REASONING ABILITYStrategic and analytical reasoning skills are necessary. Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variable in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form.

The incumbent will be required to sit, walk, talk, hear, and see with both near and far acuity. Must be able to effectively demonstrate different skills relating to track and field and be able to demonstrate proper weight training techniques. The head coach should be able to lift a minimum of 40 pounds on a regular basis.
WORK ENVIRONMENTThe tasks involved with this position will be performed in a variety of environments, including an office environment, a classroom environment, and indoor and outdoor athletic facilities. The noise level in the work environment varies from quiet to extremely noisy.
