UCDH Outpatient pharmacies emphasize patient care in Hospital Discharge. Oncology, Infectious Diseases, Ambulatory Care, Employee Health and Specialty Pharmacy. Our pharmacies are responsible for screening prescriptions for appropriateness and making interventions, preparing medications for dispensing, distribution activities, providing immunizations and providing patient consultations. Staff are responsible for appropriate prescription billing to multiple payers including third party insurances, Medicaid, Medicare D and Medicare B plans. Our pharmacies maintain compliance with multiple accrediting bodies and with State and Federal Laws and Regulations.

Responsibilities

This position supervises Technicians in the Specialty Pharmacy and is an integral member of the healthcare team. Technicians are responsible for providing drug dispensing and distribution activities, compounding prescriptions, maintaining pharmacy robotics, inventory management, prescription billing, processing payments for prescriptions and training other personnel. In addition to technician responsibilities, this position is responsible for supporting their direct reports and may involve timecard activities, performance management, scheduling, overseeing daily operations and other responsibilities. This position reports to and collaborates with the Pharmacy Supervisor. This position fosters excellent intra-and interdepartmental relationships and provides quality and cost-effective pharmaceutical care to all patients.

Must be able to work and travel to ALL Outpatient pharmacies listed in this Department Description


Required Qualifications

  • Registration with the California State Board of Pharmacy as a Pharmacy Technician
  • At least 4 years of recent Outpatient Pharmacy experience as a technician
  • Working knowledge in billing current third-party insurances, Medicare Part B and California State Medicaid
  • Working knowledge in submitting authorization requests for medications
  • Must be able to accurately perform pharmacy calculations
  • Working knowledge of current California Pharmacy Law
  • Ability to operate Pharmacy Information System and other computer programs
  • Must be able to walk/stand stoop and bend for long periods of time.


Preferred Qualifications

  • Previous Supervisory Experience in a pharmacy setting
  • Experience working at a UCDH OutpatienUSpecialty pharmacy
  • Experience working in a Health System Pharmacy, Specialty Pharmacy or Pharmacy Benefit Management Company
  • Pharmacy Technician Certification (CPhT)
  • Experience with non-sterile compounding tasks using equipment including, but not limited to: graduated cylinders, mortars and pestles, scales, stirring machines, etc.
  • Epic EMA, Willow Ambulatory, specialty pharmacy case management systems and other clinical software experience
  • Current working knowledge of pharmacy terminology, generic/brand names and drug abbreviations
  • Working knowledge of current Medi-Cal Formulary and other third-party billing systems.
  • Must be able to recognize situations that exceed technician authority and ability and must be referred to a pharmacist for resolution.
  • Experience correctly and accurately using and troubleshooting automated dispensing machines
  • Problem-solving skills to independently recognize and define a problem and identify the resources available to help solve the problem. To independently create and implement viable solutions and follow through to ensure the problem is resolved.
  • Ability to exercise discretion to ensure that patient confidentiality is maintained, and a professional, respectful clinic/department
  • environment exists at all times.
  • Ability to impart knowledge and develop the skills of students participating in training programs, as well as new hires and staff seeking additional opportunities.
  • Working knowledge of and skill to apply practices, principles and techniques of patient care related to area of expertise.

  • Experience with bargaining units and labor relations
  • Experience ensuring compliance of operations to specialty pharmacy accrediting bodies (i.e. URAC, T JC, ACHC, etc .. )
  • Experience in MS Office suite: Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access
  • Must be able to lift packages up to 50 pounds without assistance and push/pull carts up to 600 pounds.


Special Requirements

Incumbent must adhere to the customer service principles of UCDHS. Must be able to work occasional overtime, usually during computer failure, un-anticipated staff shortages, or, unusually heavy dispensing periods. No smoking allowed in work area. TB test and blood serum sample required annually per JCAHO Standards. Must dress in a professional manner, as outlined by the Departmental dress code and have good personal hygiene. Must be able to competently staff all UCDHS Pharmacies and perform all job tasks in all areas of outpatient pharmacy. Must be able to work evenings, nights, rotating weekends, and holidays. Special protective equipment must be used for preparation of hazardous substances and spill clean-up.

This position may be subject to a criminal background investigation, drug screen, Live Scan fingerprinting, medical evaluation clearance, and functional capacity assessment.
