Indiana School for the Blind & Visually Impaired (ISBVI):
The School is nationally and internationally recognized for its excellence and best practices in educating children and young adults who are blind or have low vision. The School is a critical resource for Indiana’s children who are blind or have low vision and the teachers, parents, and caregivers who work with them. Every year, we educate hundreds of children and young adults ranging from 3 to 22 years old and living in all parts of Indiana, many of whom, due to severe or multiple disabilities, other schools in the state have difficulty serving or cannot serve.
This is a 1st shift position.
Salary Information:
This position normally begins at $28,288.00 annually.
The Residential Mentor facilitates the care and guidance of students and other youth at a state facility.
The essential functions of this role are as follows:
- Supervises students in dormitories, classrooms, lunch rooms and off campus trips under the supervision of the teacher or residential leader.
- Supervises student housekeeping activities and inspects dorms and living areas for safety and cleanliness.
- Prepares necessary materials as directed by the teacher and/or supervisor.
- Assists with activities outside the classroom and/or dormitories.
- Supports discipline policy of the classroom/residential program, resolves conflicts between students and assists in monitoring behavior plans.
- Assures that student hygiene, toileting and safety needs are met.
- Performs a variety of duties providing for the guidance, care, training, development and socialization of hearing and/or visually impaired, physically challenged or developmentally delayed students.
- Follows emergency procedures for fire, storm, tornado drills and warnings.
- Promotes the nine dimensions of student development, including cultural, intellectual, life planning, political, spiritual, physical, emotional, sexual and social.
- Coordinates programs and recreational activities for students and completes and documents programming plans, paperwork, incidents and student progress.

- Must be at least 21 years of age.
- Basic understanding of the characteristics, needs and effective methods of guidance of students of varying ages at different stages of development and at different levels of mental ability.
- Knowledge of state, federal and agency rules and regulations.
- Ability to keep accurate records concerning the care of the students.
- Ability to supervise students in dormitories, classrooms and other on-and-off campus activities.
- Effectively communicate, both orally and in writing.
This role does not provide direct supervision to direct reports.
