Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) – The Oaks Nursing Home – Monroe, LA

Provide quality care to residents and assist with daily living activities which allows for privacy, dignity, freedom of choice, & well-being of each resident while complying with regulatory and nursing home requirements, policies, procedures, and confidentiality of all residents, staff and nursing home operations.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Provide personal care to residents such as bathing, grooming, oral hygiene, shaving, feeding, incontinent care, catheter & perineal care, toileting, colostomy care, prosthetic appliances, transferring communicating, and other needs in keeping with the individual resident care requirements.
  • Assist resident in dressing and undressing; skin and nail care, and hair removal.
  • Assist residents in turning on the bed or re-positioning in bed and/or wheelchair; and assist them in and out of bed and movement by walking and wheel chair. Assist resident with oxygen and tubing to go from place to place.
  • Answer call-lights promptly and courteously.
  • Empty bedpans and bedside commodes; assists with lab specimens and dressings; clean up blood, body fluids, & other spills.
  • Assists nurses with basic medical procedures and taking vital signs, weights and heights.
  • Monitor residents appearance, i.e., clean clothes, odor free, combed hair, etc. Take action as necessary.
  • Ensure call lights are within residents reach when they are in their rooms.
  • Knock on doors and wait for a response before entering residents’ rooms, even if the door is open.
  • Deliver food trays, assist in resident feeding, & return trays to kitchen
  • Responsible for working safely, including the use of universal or standard precautions and safe work practices, established emergency preparedness plans, and security requirements.
  • Report and/or correct unsafe working conditions. Report and/or log equipment repair and maintenance needs in the maintenance log.
  • Cooperate and works together with all co-workers and departments.
  • Plan and complete job duties with minimal supervisory direction, including appropriate judgment.
  • Uses tactful, appropriate communications in sensitive and emotional situations with residents, family members, and /or management and other employees.
  • Follows up as appropriate with supervisor, co-workers or residents regarding resident or family member requests, reported complaints, problems and concerns.
  • Promotes positive public relations with residents, family members and guests.
  • Completes requirements for in-service training, acceptable attendance, dress code, including personal hygiene, and other work duties as assigned.
  • Knowledgeable of the individualized care plan for residents and provide support to the resident according to the care plan.
  • Provide specific information and observations of the residents’ needs and preferences to staff members involved with care planning and/or providing care to the resident.
  • Provide individualized attention, which encourages each resident’s ability to maintain or attain the highest practical physical, mental, and psychosocial well-being.
  • Interact with residents in a manner that displays warmth and promotes a caring environment.
  • Protect and keep in a organized manner the personal belongings of each resident including eyeglasses, dentures, hearing aids, furnishings, jewelry, clothing, memorabilia, etc. Promptly report missing items according to established policy and participate in efforts to locate missing items.
  • Follow the written wheelchair cleaning schedule.
  • Observe residents for changes in condition or behavior and promptly report these changes to appropriate licensed nursing personnel.
  • Provide care that maintains each resident’s skin integrity to prevent pressure ulcers, skin tears, and other damage by changing incontinent residents, turning, repositioning immobile residents, and applying moisturizers to fragile skin, etc.
  • Assist in emergency care, control minimal bleeding; assist in postmortem care.
  • Assist with orienting residents and their families to the nursing home upon admission and to the unit when transfers occur.
  • Lift, move, and transport residents, using proper body mechanics or lifting devices for accident prevention.
  • Communicate and interact effectively and tactfully with the resident, visitors, families, peers, and supervisors.
  • Assist and escort residents for appointments such as beauty shop, activities, church services, etc.
  • Practice careful, efficient, and no-wasteful use of supplies and linens.
  • Complete certified nursing assistant records documenting care provided or other information in keeping with policies & procedures.
  • Perform all job responsibilities in accordance with prescribed safety and infection control procedures including thorough hand washing, use of disposable gloves where indicated, and proper disposal of soiled materials.
  • Fully understands and complies with Residents’ Rights.
  • Promptly report to CNA Supervisor or administrative staff suspected or actual incidents or evidence of resident abuse or violation of residents’ rights.
  • Comply with and complete skills checklist as scheduled
  • Enter accurate and timely charting information into the electronic medical records system
  • Performs related and other duties as assigned.

Education; Experience; License(s), Certification(s), Registration(s), Accreditation(s)

  • Must be 18 or older.
  • High School Diploma or equivalent is required (GED or HiSet)
  • Current CNA Certificate required.
  • Previous CNA work experience preferred, but OJT (on-the-job-training) with close supervision may be provided.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Ability to read, write, speak and follow oral and written instructions in English.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others and be courteous, tactful and patient when dealing with residents, family members, employees and the public.
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing.
  • Ability to use computer and complete on-line training, and other job-related tasks.
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks and work with frequent interruptions.
