Nurse (Resident) – US Veterans Health Administration – Cheyenne, WY

The RN Residency Program’s focuses on refinement of graduate nurse clinical competencies, and development of professional nursing roles and leadership characteristics. The program utilizes a variety of educational strategies including classroom education, precepted clinical experiences, monthly meetings, group clinical debriefings, one-on-one mentoring, and an evidence-based practice project.

The RN Residency Program is a comprehensive 12-month standardized curriculum designed to assist the postgraduate nurse in the transition from entry-level, advanced beginner nurse to competent professional RN. This program is a comprehensive developmental training program that has both didactic and clinical components designed to afford the post-graduate RN the opportunity to perform the role, duties, patient care activities and procedures that are carried out by RNs. Each the post-graduate RN is assigned a Preceptor and Mentor who is an experienced RN who has completed the preceptor or mentor training. While in the program the post-graduate RN is learning in both formal and informal work-related learning environments (under closer than normal supervision) as determined and in collaboration with the Preceptor and Mentor.

Goal of this position:
1. Ease the transition of the new graduate into the professional role of a Registered Nurse in both practice and leadership.
2. Develop both the confidence and the competence of the new graduate RN to ensure safe practice.
3. Increase the new graduates understanding in the use of Evidence-Based Practice.
4. Foster a relationship that promotes a commitment to nursing and the Cheyenne VAMC.

Minimal Qualifications:
1. Granted an unconditional RN license.
2. Minimum GPA of 3.5.
3. Graduated from an accredited nursing program with less than 12 months experience as a Registered Nurse.

Following the Residency Program, the RNs will be placed in vacant position throughout the medical center based on the best suitable position for the RN and the unit.

The population of male and female veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. Cheyenne VAMC is an interdisciplinary facility, serving medical, surgical, and neurological inpatients and outpatients. There is an outpatient psychiatric population, with visits to the Emergency Department and admissions for medical co-morbidities. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, and manual dexterity. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, and pushing. Transferring patients and objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infected patients and contaminated materials and may be required to wear protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are combative secondary to delirium, dementia, or psychiatric disorders. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs
