Manager Pharmacy-Informatics/Supply Chain/Finance – Northwestern Medicine – Chicago, IL

The Manager, Pharmacy reflects the mission, vision, and values of NM, adheres to the organization’s Code of Ethics and Corporate Compliance Program, and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and all other regulatory and accreditation standards.

The Manager, Pharmacy is responsible for the operation of Pharmacy Services, including strategic planning, daily operations, translating Northwestern Medicine goals and strategies into the Work Unit/Department short and long term plans, working with the clinical leadership for definition and implementation of clinical and distributive services, pharmaceutical educational programs, financial, and personnel management.


Responsibilities:

  • Legal and Regulatory:

    • Responsible for ensuring Work Unit/Department compliance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws, codes, statutes and regulations governing pharmacy practice.
    • Responsible for meeting the regulatory requirements of inside and outside auditors and accrediting bodies.
  • Pharmacy Services:

    • Implementing and maintaining pharmacy services that are an integral part of the care delivery systems of Northwestern Medicine
    • Advocates for the implementation of new technology and the provision of clinical pharmacy services that will improve both patient care and economic outcomes.
    • The services are of a scope and quality commensurate with identified patient needs and extend to all areas where medications for patients are prescribed, dispensed, administered, and monitored.
    • The services are integrated into the overall planning of patient care services for Northwestern Medicine.
    • The service is responsible for around-the clock procurement, preparation, distribution and control of all medications used including those that are investigational.
  • Patient Care:

    • Ensure that medications are appropriately provided to achieve the desired therapeutic outcome consistent with patient parameters and disease states.
    • Knowledge about working with patient population facilitates the identification of appropriate measures needed to meet the patient population needs.
  • Leadership and Management:

    • Provides effective leadership and management for the achievement of short and long term goals of the Work Unit/Department and Northwestern Medicine relating to financial effectiveness, personnel, information systems, and medication use and policy development.
    • Oversees the development of talent across sections in technical, clinical, and leadership positions.
    • Manages staffing in areas of responsibility which include hiring, training, competency assessment (age-specific competencies), corrective action, mentoring, sponsoring, effective supervision, and coaching and performance evaluation.
    • Manages the effective allocation of human resources within areas of responsibility which include the appropriate staffing mix and levels, and management of productivity based on patient care needs.
    • Provides oversight of trainees, including fellows, residents, students and affiliations with colleges of pharmacy and technician training programs.
    • Ensures substantial compliance with national pharmacy practice standards and guidelines.
    • Provides department leadership to the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees and other NM committees, including Medical Staff Committees.
    • Facilitates interdepartmental coordination and cooperation to identify and address departmental/organizational needs by acting as a liaison between the pharmacy department and other disciplines.
  • Safety/Quality Management:

    • Oversees the implementation of medication safety initiatives within the hospital and outpatient settings.
    • Participates and supports medication use quality initiatives through the Pharmacy and Therapeutics Committees.
    • Participates in broad and specific Hospital quality initiatives as indicated by the annual quality plan.
    • Committed to implementing and supportive of new tools and technology to improve the safe dispensing, prescribing, and administration of medications within the institution.
    • Facilitates the practice of evidence-based medicine through the coordination of physician and staff education, the development of collaborative practice agreements between physicians and pharmacists and policy making.
    • Demonstrates commitment to performance improvement by adopting process improvement methodologies/projects through interdisciplinary leadership.
  • Financial Management:

    • Oversight of the financial management of pharmacy cost centers.
    • Accountability for establishing and monitoring operating and capital budgets.
    • Oversees the development of capital request proposals and capital project management.
    • Oversees major equipment purchase and software upgrades/implementations, product selection, document preparation for equipment acquisition, and oversight of the vendor negotiation process.
    • Manages, coordinates, and documents successful drug cost reduction initiatives.
  • Education/Staff Development:

    • Establishes connections with colleges of pharmacy for experiential training of Doctor of Pharmacy students in both the inpatient and ambulatory setting.
    • Actively participates and provides direction in the planning of post- graduate training in pharmacy that meets the ASHP accreditation standards.
    • Provides opportunities for educational programming and coordinates technical and pharmacist staff participation in such programs to promote continued professional development.


Qualifications


Required:

  • Graduate of an accredited college of Pharmacy
  • Licensed Pharmacist in Illinois OR obtain license within 90 days of start date.
  • Minimum 5 years of experience in a health care institution or equivalent advanced Pharmacy residency/fellowship training
  • Evidence of effective communication skills both oral and written with all levels of internal and external customers.


Preferred:

  • Experience normally acquired through 7 to 10 years of pharmacy experience in a health care institution.
  • Completion of an accredited Pharmacy Residency
