Organizational Summary:


OrchKids is a year-round, during and after school, music program designed to create social change and nurture promising futures for youth in Baltimore City neighborhoods. Under Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s Music Director/OrchKids Founding Director, Marin Alsop’s artistic leadership and direction, OrchKids is the cornerstone of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s community engagement efforts across the city. Founded in 2008 with 30 students at one elementary school – with seed funding from Marin Alsop and Founding Donors Rheda Becker and Robert E. Meyerhoff, OrchKids now works with ten schools in Baltimore City, serving close to 2,000 children from Pre-K through 12th grade.



In collaboration with several community partners, including Baltimore City Public Schools, OrchKids provides music education, instruments, academic instruction, meals, as well as performance and mentorship opportunities at no cost to students and families. OrchKids is an acknowledged leader in the El Sistema-inspired and social-change through music movement throughout the world and serves as a replicable model for other cities.


Job Summary:


The OrchKids Program Manager plays an integral role in managing and leading the operational, artistic, and logistical planning for 1-2 sites of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra’s OrchKids program. This position acts as a core member of the OrchKids program team and is responsible for leading small, site-based administrative teams, oversight of teaching artist staff, as well as providing mentoring/training to new program team members. As a key fixture of the program team, a Program Manager also supports coordinating cross-site projects as well as guest artist performances for their sites. This position is under the supervision of the OrchKids Director of Programs but also works collaboratively with the OrchKids Executive Director, OrchKids Director of Operations and Strategic Partnerships, OrchKids Director of Development, OrchKids Director of Education as well as other Program Managers and team members. This position will have frequent evening and weekend responsibilities.


Specific Responsibilities:


DESIGN:


  • Work collaboratively with OrchKids Director of Programs and Leadership Team to design site programmatic framework/schedule for during and after-school programming at 1-2 sites
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Programs and Director of Operations/Partnerships to create/implement artistic content and initiatives for sites
  • Design cross-site opportunities with other Program Managers and Leadership/Education Team
  • Work closely with Director of Programs and other Leadership/Education Team members to evaluate programming and design strategic adjustments to current and new OrchKids programming


MANAGE/SUPERVISE:


  • Manage the operations of OrchKids programming including:

    • Student enrollment process, site-based payroll, data collection, tracking and student retention, any administrative reporting, site level communication systems, and other HR matters in adherence to the OrchKids standard operating procedures


  • Manage the hiring and recruitment for site programs
  • Supervise administrative program staff in areas of training and staff development
  • Supervise site team(s) to ensure the successful implementation of site programmatic framework and schedule for during and after-school programming
  • Manage OrchKids Teaching Artists at assigned sites
  • Work collaboratively with the Director of Programs and Operations/Partnerships to manage the creation of site budgets, tracking of site budgets, and site budgetary decisions


DEVELOP/CULTIVATE:


  • Work with Leadership Team to cultivate/manage partnerships for the OrchKids program
  • Cultivate strong relationship with partner organizations, particularly pertaining to site school administrators, principals and teachers
  • Cultivate a strong, positive culture for the OrchKids program and for students at assigned sites


OTHER DUTIES AS ASSIGNED


Requirements and Qualification:


  • Bilingual candidate strongly preferred
  • Personal commitment to social justice, restorative educational and anti-racist practices, as well as trauma-informed philosophies
  • Demonstrated effective planning and organizational skills, able to meet deadlines
  • Personal leadership through example, coupled with ability to work collaboratively with colleagues and staff to create a results-driven, team-oriented environment
  • Ability to multi-task calmly and to handle emergencies effectively
  • Effective public speaking skills and presence
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong managerial and people skills, and the ability to maintain tact, diplomacy and the strictest confidence as needed
  • At least 3 years of experience working in a mentorship and/or education capacity, with elementary/middle school age children preferred


  • Ability to handle multiple interruptions and adjustments to priorities throughout the day
  • Personal integrity and strict code of confidentiality and professionalism
  • Strong commitment to the philosophy of social change through music
  • Ability to handle numerous projects simultaneously
  • Ability to implement projects from conception to completion with minimal supervision
  • Proficient in Microsoft programs, and ability to learn other software programs as needed
  • Basic knowledge of the symphonic repertoire preferred
  • Ability to work nights and weekends, as required
  • An appreciation for symphonic music and the arts
  • Bachelor’s degree or equivalent work experience
  • Successful completion of a background check
