Position Summary:
The Student Technician (Student Tech) reports to the Nurse Manager (NM) and under the direction and supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN), and Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) is responsible to the department Director and its clients to provide direct patient care, observation, documentation and reporting of patient conditions. Incumbent will be scheduled based on operational needs including shift rotations, floating, standby and administrative absence.


Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform basic nursing care and treatment procedures on assigned patients as directed by the RN/LPN. Observe and document vital signs. Perform blood pressure, temperature, pulse and respirations as directed by RN/LPN. Answer patient call lights.
  • Assist in preparing the patient for procedures. Rounding on patients and monitoring patients for safety. Assists patients with ambulation as needed.
  • Maintain appropriate levels of medical supplies and equipment. Maintain neat and orderly department, patient rooms, and storage rooms. Maintain regulatory readiness at all times. Clean and stock nursing stations, clean IV poles, charts, and chart racks. Strips soiled linen, cleans bed and equipment in patient room. Perform other housekeeping duties as needed. Cleans and stores equipment and supplies after completion of work, cleans and straightens shelves, maintains linen supply, and assists with equipment retrieval as needed. Checks and stocks oxygen tanks, gowns and blankets to ensure availability for patient care.
  • Performs and documents Point of Care (POC) Blood Glucose Testing, POC Pregnancy testing, and Quality Control (QC) checks. Checks and logs blanket warmer temperature.
  • Transports patients interdepartmentally or to discharge door.
  • Participates in team member development programs. Attends scheduled staff meetings and is responsible for information discussed. Participates in the I3/Lean initiative at Lake Health. Maintains annual competencies.
  • Successful completion of orientation program. Perform charting duties as directed. Provide personal care (i.e., bathes, oral care, etc.) to patients as directed. Adhere to instructions issued by RN/LPN and established routine. Report observed changes in patient’s physical, mental and emotional well-being. Prepare patients for meals and assist with nourishment, serve and collect trays, feed/assist patients with meals, provide between-meal nourishment, and pass ice and fresh water. Pass and empty bedpans/urinals, collect specimens (urine, stool, sputum) and deliver to lab as directed, strain urine as directed, and measure and record intake and output. Perform special patient care duties and perform simple treatments as directed by RN/LPN. Surgery preparation, isolation patient care/housekeeping, and postmortem care. Removal of peripheral intravascular (IV) device, Oral and tracheal Suction, insertion, care and removal of Urinary Catheter, Dressing changes to include: sterile and nonsterile dressing, central line, colostomy (not to include packing dressings) and phlebotomy at BMC and ED.
  • Follow departmental procedures for patient identification and labeling of specimens. Properly label specimens following OSHA guidelines. Communicate completion of specimen collection to RN/LPN and document as appropriate. Deliver specimens to specimen processing staff in Laboratory or to the Laboratory directly.
  • Perform other related duties as directed. Application of anti-embolism stockings, maintain oxygen therapy and obtain pulse oximetry readings as directed by RN/LPN. Ambulate patients, give back rubs, exercise, reposition patients, and assist patients in and out of bed, chairs and wheel chairs. Set up over bed frame and use Hoyer lift as directed by RN.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to age of the patients served as detailed in Lake Health’s Plan of Care. Competency is evidenced by Team Member/client observations and feedback. Incorporate the principles of growth and development relative to the patient’s age specific needs, with the Plan of Care.


Education and Experience:

High School diploma or GED required, Must currently be an active nursing student with fifty percent or more completion of nursing program or; currently a graduate Professional or Practical Nurse who has not as of yet passed state board exams. Minimum overall GPA of 2.75. American Heart Association (AHA), Basic Life Support (BLS)

Must be actively enrolled in an accredited nursing program or graduated and waiting for state board exams.
