THE COMMUNITY: The Police Department commitment to excellence, respect, professionalism, and integrity through collaborative community partnerships promotes a high quality of life in our town locals refer to as “P.G.” Our town shares borders with the Del Monte Forest, the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay, Pebble Beach, and Monterey which boasts of a fully accessible 3.5 mile coastline, stunning pine and oak forests, scenic 18-hole municipal golf links, the oldest continuously operating lighthouse on the west coast, Asilomar State Park and Beach, award-winning Natural History Museum, several municipal parks to include the coastal Recreation Trail, and a quaint downtown area. The Police Department is made up of 33 full-time positions, which includes 22 sworn staff, serving a community of 15,522 residents.

SUMMARY: Under direct supervision, attends an approved California Commission on Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST) basic police academy to be trained in the technical knowledge, skills, and physical capabilities required to perform police service; performs related duties as required.

ACADEMY DATES: * Selected Police Recruit(s) will attend the Monterey Peninsula College (MPC) Public Safety Training Center, September 13, 2021 to March 15, 2022.

This is a non-sworn, training level classification in the Police Department. Incumbents will attend a basic police academy for training and California Peace Officers Standards and Training (POST). During the training, incumbents do not have police powers and are subject to the rules and regulations of the City of Pacific Grove Police Department and the academy attended. Trainees may be assigned non-safety duties in the Police Department such as assisting in Records; crime prevention; collecting information and data; transporting people and materials, etc. Promotion to a sworn Police Officer position is contingent upon successful completion of the basic academy and the final review of the Police Chief. Upon promotion to Police Officer, incumbents will begin a new one-year probationary period.

Minimum Qualifications
Education, Training and Experience:

Must be at least 21 years of age at the time of appointment.

  • Must be a citizen of the United States at the time of appointment.
  • Must possess a valid California Driver’s License at the time of appointment.
  • Must be possess a High School diploma, a G.E.D. certificate, and/or have attained a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited school, college, or university.
  • Must be fingerprinted through local, state, and national systems for the disclosure of criminal records.
  • Must be of good moral character as determined by a thorough backgrounds investigation, including a polygraph examination.
  • Must be found free of any physical, emotional, or mental conditions that might adversely affect the exercise of peace officer powers.
  • Must be willing to work evening, night, weekend, and holiday shifts.
  • Must provide proof POST Entry-level Law Enforcement Test Battery (PELLETB) Written Exam and the Physical Agility WSTB Exams were successfully passed.
