Ophthalmic Assistant – IOL – Eye Clinic of Wisconsin – Wausau, WI

Position Summary:

Assist in the care of patients by performing ultrasounds and a variety of preliminary tests according to the physician orders and nature of the patient visit. Run intraocular lens calculations accurately and maintain a general knowledge of different types of IOLs.


Principle Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Assist physician with patients
  • Escorts patients to and from exam areas, may be required to assist patients with walking, by pushing wheelchairs, lifting and transferring
  • Demonstrate a clear understanding of patient medical records and documentation protocol; prepare charts for physicians to complete intraocular lens orders (IOL)
  • Prepare post-LASIK charts for physicians to complete IOL orders
  • Complete and accurately document testing
  • Provide patient education on testing performed and general questions on cataract surgery
  • Ultrasonography: Lenstar, IOL Master, A-Scan and Immersion A-Scan; includes keratometry readings, corneal diameter, anterior chamber depth, lens thickness and axial length measurements as needed on pre-op IOL patients., as well as read and understand testing
  • Corneal topography; operate the Pentacam and Humphrey Topography, instruments that produces computerized mapping of the corneal surface
  • Accurately perform and record applanation tonometry and tonopen
  • Check anterior chamber angles
  • Instill eye drops
  • Understand Toric and premium intraocular lenses (PIOL) and address specific needs related to them as needed; run IOL calculations for physicians to complete orders
  • Responsible for faxing, copying or sending IOL orders to hospitals and/or surgery centers
  • Accurately record post-operative outcome data
  • Accurately enter information into appropriate software for calculation of intraocular lens orders
  • Complete and send lens orders in a timely manner
  • Other duties as assigned


Work Relationship and Scope:

The Certified Ophthalmic Assistant IOL works closely with physicians, patients, and other medical floor staff. The COA IOL reports directly to the ASC Clinical Director.


Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • High School Graduate
  • Strong communication skills; verbal and written
  • Demonstrates knowledge of proper, safe, efficient usage of office equipment, computers, and software; working knowledge of Microsoft Office
  • Ability to develop good working relationships with physicians and staff
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced medical facility while adhering to HIPAA compliance regulations
  • Strong aptitude with computer software and typing skills
  • Home study course for Certified Ophthalmic Assistant (COA) within two years
  • Understanding of medical terminology and basic anatomy of the eye
  • Knowledge of examination equipment and instrumentation, operation and maintenance
  • Ability to display accuracy, positive attitude and be able work well independently
  • Previous experience in a medical office desirable


Work Conditions:

Eye Clinic of Wisconsin has seven locations; while staff will be assigned to a “home” location, travel to satellites is a requirement of the position. Hours of work will be dependent on the needs of the Clinic. Requires the ability to sit or stand for extended periods of time. Occasional lifting (30 pounds), bending, stooping, pushing, pulling, and climbing stairs is required.
