The campus Resident Veterinarian provides the leadership, authority, and credentials required for animal use in education. The Resident Veterinarian is responsible for the care and use of all animals and shares a substantial role in the management of the department, development of the program, and instruction of staff and students.
Responsibilities of this position may include:
- Solicit input from instructors as to animal needs for classes.
- Perform the initial intake examination of animals obtained, formulate the diagnostic and/or treatment plans, direct the implementation of the plan according to the instructional needs of classes, manage progress and amend the plan as needed, monitor animal records for accuracy and proper Subjective, Objective, Assessment and Plan (SOAP) format, and complete the discharge information.
- Oversee the performance of Certified Veterinary Technician’s (CVT) in procedures requiring the supervision of a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM). Perform surgery and other special procedures that require a DVM license; make diagnoses, write prescriptions, and sign health, sterilization, and rabies certificates as indicated.
- Devise procedures and policies for the campus Veterinary Technology Department to ensure compliance with Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) and United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) regulations regarding the use of animals. Assist the Program Chair in maintaining facilities and documentation in accordance with regulations. Train and supervise staff and student adherence to the policies.
- Develop procedures and policies for the campus Veterinary Technology Department that promote American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) standards, wherever possible.
- Participate at New Student Orientation and New Faculty Orientation
- Participate in professional growth and in-service activities, including belonging to professional associations (if available)
- Communicate regularly with the Program Chair, Dean of Education, and Campus Director regarding program-specific needs and challenges
- Promote and support service and applied learning initiatives within the program; Assist with programmatic considerations
- Collaborate with Career Services to identify potential partnership opportunities (placement, externships, etc.) in the community
- Partner with curriculum leaders regarding revisions and maintenance of master course content
- Participate in regular advisory board meetings to receive counsel regarding equipment needs, curriculum, and local employer requests.
- Serve as a knowledgeable resource for all animal-related issues and program-specific topics; field questions from admissions representatives and prospective students, current and former students, and fellow instructors.
- Meet programmatic and accreditation requirements per Broadview Education Consortium standards (AVMA/CVTEA, USDA, OSHA, DEA, etc.)

Requirements include:
- State Licensed Veterinarian; Graduate of an AVMA-accredited program
- Appropriate relevant work experience in the field of study
