Counseling Psychologist – University of California San Francisco – San Francisco, CA

The Counseling Psychologist provides psychological services UCSF students and scholars and dependents enrolled with the Student Health Insurance Plan on a wide variety of presenting concerns. All UCSF students are post-graduate, health professions students. The individual will provide assessment, crisis intervention, individual and group counseling. Consult regularly with Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) primary care providers about psychological factors affecting students’ well-being and health. The position is part of the SHCS integrated care model of care delivery which includes design and implementation of psycho-educational programming and outreach programs to address a range of student needs. The Counseling Psychologist consults with faculty and staff on issues relevant to student educational performance, emotional well-being and psychological functioning.

Department Description

UCSF Student Health and Counseling Services (SHCS) offers primary care, mental health counseling, psychiatry services, outreach programming for both physical and mental health topics, travel health services, nursing triage, and health insurance support services for all UCSF students with the overall goal of supporting students’ personal and academic success.

SHCS’s mission is to optimize the physical and mental health of students in order to help them achieve academic success, personal development and lifelong wellness. To accomplish this mission, we: tailor our services to the unique needs of a diverse and multi-cultural student community, continuously evaluate and improve services to offer comprehensive, high-quality care, and strive to create a healthy and caring campus culture. SHCS staff work collaboratively to provide integrated care to UCSF students.

Required Qualifications

  • Doctorate degree in clinical psychology or counseling psychology from an American Psychological Association (APA) accredited program
  • Completion of an APA accredited internship
  • Current, valid license as a psychologist in California or licensed in another jurisdiction and licensed in California within 6 months from date of hire
  • Must be able to be fully credentialed to practice via the SHCS credentialing process
  • Experience providing psychological services to women and underserved populations
  • Clinical experience working with individuals who are in varying states of emotional distress presenting with a wide range of psychological concerns and disorders
  • Expertise in working with multicultural and underserved student populations
  • Experience providing clinical services and outreach to students of color
  • Strong skills providing brief individual and couples counseling and time-limed, brief psychotherapy
  • Skills in psychological consultation, crisis management and outreach programming
  • Thorough knowledge associated with providing evaluation, diagnosis and psychotherapy services
  • Thorough knowledge of applicable laws and standards of professional conduct
  • Ability to conduct complex analysis and develop and present recommendations and course of treatment
  • Must be computer literate
  • Ability to use of electronic/medical records systems
  • Highly effective written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills, including strong skills in delivering group presentations, lectures and workshops aimed to bring a psychological perspective to bear on University life
  • Thorough skills associated with conducting complex diagnosis, problem-solving and critical thinking
  • Ability to work in a highly collaborative manner with diverse client group, members of the medical staff and faculty
  • Ability to work collaboratively with a highly skilled, enthusiastic, friendly staff
  • Must be able to work at least one evening until 7pm per week

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience working on a college campus or with college students, preferably graduate and/or professional students
  • Thorough knowledge of diagnostic/psychological testing methodologies
  • Experience providing counseling related to alcohol and drug use and abuse

License/Certification

  • Current, valid license as a psychologist in California or licensed in another jurisdiction and licensed in California within 6 months from date of hire
  • Must be able to be fully credentialed to practice via the SHCS credentialing process
