LADC Position Overview

The Counselor plays an important role in the delivery of treatment services to the clients and is responsible for ensuring that all clients receive services as mandated by the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS). The Counselor provides services to support achievement of effective personal development working with clients individually and in group settings to identify and resolve issues including substance use, mental health, personal and/or emotional and family issues. Counselors must be able to maintain client confidentiality in accordance with state and federal guidelines and HIPAA requirements.

Responsibilities of LADC

  • Under direction of the Program Director and Program Manager(s), deliver services meeting licensure requirements and individual client needs as a member of the multi-disciplinary team in residential or outpatient settings
  • Provide individual case management/file documentation for assigned caseload, noting all treatment related activities and services in an accurate, professional, and timely manner including assessment of substance use and mental health problems, creating and monitoring individualized treatment plans, providing group therapy and individual counseling services to individuals with co-occurring substance abuse and mental health issues
  • Facilitate psycho-educational and therapeutic process groups regarding the disease of addiction and the recovery process consistent with maintaining mental health
  • Receive weekly supervision with Mental Health Provider (as applicable)
  • Provide culturally sensitive and relevant services to diverse clients and their families
  • Responsible for complying with federal and state confidentiality statutes following the approved lines of authority set by the Program Director, upholding ethical standards established and implied by the profession, and DHS rules, and maintenance of all required licenses including but not limited to:
    • Providing the appropriate current license(s) for their employee file
    • Providing documentation for 8 credit hours of annual mental health training
  • Familiarity with MN Rule 245G and the NUWAY House Policies and Procedures Manual as they relate to client services, client records and personnel
  • Working closely with the Admissions Department, manage and communicate details around client funding
  • Perform data entry/updates for assigned clients into Minnesota Department of Human Services on DAANES
  • Attend in-service training sessions sufficient to meet professional requirements
  • Keep abreast of rules and changes in substance use disorder (SUD) treatment field
  • Be available to represent the organization outside the facility at community outreach events as needed
  • May provide supervision and mentoring for student interns
  • Attend to after-hours consultation with staff or clients as needed
  • Conduct oneself in a manner that presents a positive reflection on professionalism as an asset to the image of the organization
  • Other duties as assigned or required

Qualifications, Skills, Knowledge and Experience

Required for LADC:

  • Current LADC License and in supervision for additional license of: LP, LICSW, LMFT, or LPCC
  • Age 18 or older
  • Demonstrated working knowledge in the field of substance use disorder and/or mental health, in an addiction treatment facility
  • Previous counseling or counseling internship required
  • High degree of computer literacy including experience using an electronic health records (EHR) system
  • Excellent written, communication, customer service, and case management skills
  • Able to pass Minnesota DHS background study
  • Must be free of problematic substance use for at least two years immediately preceding employment and must sign a statement attesting to that fact
  • Possess maturity, patience, understanding and empathy with recovering individuals and work with a multidisciplinary team
  • Ability to relate to people from diverse backgrounds
  • Physical Demands: Sitting for extended periods of time. Daily use of general office and/or residential facility equipment. Lifting (max 10 pounds), minimal reaching, bending and stooping. Ability to effectively navigate program and office environment such as ascending and descending steps, passing through doorways and entrances, and accessing program/office facilities.

  • Bachelor or Master degree in related field
  • Skilled consultant and facilitator
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong facilitation, negotiation, investigation and mediation skills
