Primary Function:

Assists providers in the administration of patient care in assigned clinical areas. Assists with patient examinations, procedures, diagnostic studies, and treatments. Performs general administrative duties in accordance with JCAHO, CLIA, NCQA and government standards, as well as company policies and procedures. Collaborates with providers and multidisciplinary members; provides physical and psychological support to patients, friends, and families.


Qualifications:

Registered or Certified Medical Assistant is preferred.

Active BLS certification.

Job Duties:

  • Reviews charts prior to patients’ scheduled appointment to assure that all requested lab work and diagnostic procedures have been completed and that reports have been returned and are accessible to the provider.
  • Possess the ability to deliver patient care in a manner that is appropriate to the patient’s age, physical ability, and intellectual development.
  • Directs patient to examination rooms and correctly screens patient’s physical and cognitive capabilities and gives additional assistance as indicated, i.e. assist patients with disrobing, completion of forms, wheelchair/stretcher transfers, etc.
  • Competently assists in the assessment of patient needs and health planning by obtaining and recording all vital signs (BP, P, R, T, HT, WT) and a thorough chief complaint at each office visit
  • May perform venipuncture, ECG, urine samples collection/cultures, blood glucose, hemoglobin A1C, strep A, influenza, urine pregnancy testing, dressing changes and other office specific testing as ordered by the physician or provider, using universal precautions.
  • Documents care actions and patient responses within patients EMR
  • Performs insurance pre-authorizations as required or deemed necessary.
  • Possesses the ability to recognize, react, and seek assistance with emergency situations.
  • Competently operates standard office equipment which may include a photocopier, telephone, and fax machine.
  • Using Universal Precautions when necessary conducts clinical tasks per standing and provider orders including but not limited to: hearing/vision test, spirometry, ECG testing, and also records results in patients EMR.
  • Interacts with patients regarding clinical complaints for effective and immediate response and resolution. Refers to Clinic Nurses when appropriate.
  • Maintains a calm, patient, and positive attitude at all times in order to focus on assisting patients and coworkers.
  • Interacts and communicates professionally with co-workers at all times.
  • Possesses the ability to work in a team based approach with patients, doctors, nurses, medical assistants, and families to provide optimal levels of patient care.
  • Participates in daily team huddles among medical support staff in order to properly plan patient care and to receive assignments from clinic station nurse
  • May participate in Quality Improvement/Assurance activities and all training seminars (i.e. OSHA, SBIRT, PCMH, JCAHO, CI events).
  • Assists in the orientation of new employees, shares pertinent information, and teaches others to perform tasks.
  • Acts as a liaison between providers and other departments, agencies, and pharmaceutical representatives.
  • Helps to identify patient and family needs and communicates needs to provider.

24. Possesses the ability to work with frequent interruptions and responds appropriately to unexpected situations.

26. Proficient keyboarding/computer skills.

27. Competently able to access data and perform documentation via the usage of clinic’s electronic medical record. Able to increase basic computer skills as the health system adds new systems or performs upgrades to existing systems.

28. Understands and accurately communicates instructions, information and/or concepts according to provider orders utilizing proper medical terminology and grammar. Examples may include: telephone messages, triaging phone calls, patient education, scheduling/following up on referrals, scheduling/following up on appointments, and documenting such according to established clinic policies.

29. Follow clinic protocol for filing correspondence and lab work efficiently and accurately while protecting patient privacy and confidentiality according to established clinic policies as well as federal HIPPA regulations.

30. Facilitates and schedules orders as given by medical providers up to and including prior authorizations and notifying patients of scheduled appointments. Maintains ongoing tracking (follow-up) and appropriate documentation on orders to promote team awareness and ensure patient safety.

31. Comply with all clinic policies and procedures, while upholding the high expectation, goals and mission of Third Street Family Health Services.

32. Maintains competencies related to job duties, annually.

33. Effectively cope with typical job stress.

34. Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervision Received: Clinic Nursing, Assistant Director of Nursing, Director of Nursing, Medical Director.

Personal Contacts: Daily contact with patients and agency staff. Frequent contact with staff of other agencies and the general public. Must develop and maintain positive relationships with all of the above.

Essential Knowledge: Comprehensive knowledge of all available services provided by TSFHS and its entities, community resources, interpersonal communication strategies, and computer software.

Skill in: Communicating effectively in both written and verbal form, managing multiple priorities, effective time management practices, de-escalation skills, problem-solving skills, and managing change and conflict.

Ability to: Manage time and deal with multiple priorities, problem solving, exercise sound judgment, define problems, collect data, establish facts and draw valid conclusions, make decisions, maintain information in confidential manner, listen attentively, maintain records and data, and use required computer programs. Encourage staff members to work towards their full potential and to provide excellent services to our patients and their fellow co-workers.
