ABOUT THE POSITION

Under the supervision of the Crisis Stabilization Unit (CSU) Registered Nurse, the Behavioral Health Care Assistant (BHCA) assists with basic patient intake and discharge activities, including handing out admission paperwork and assisting clients with questions, cataloging patient property, and handing out necessities such as soap, towels, blankets, etc., plus other duties as assigned. The BHCA assists patients with activities of daily living such as eating, dressing, and bathing. The BHCA makes continuous efforts to ensure patient needs are met while on the unit and performs techniques of de-escalation when necessary. The BHCA assists in ensuring patient safety by completing 15-minute safety checks and 1-hour environmental safety checks on a standardized form. The Behavioral Health Care Assistant is an integral and important part of the CSU team because their consistent and continual contact with patients helps to ensure that our patients are safe, comfortable and cared for while at our unit.

There is currently one 0.5 FTE vacancy in the Crisis Stabilization Unit.

Weekly schedule (subject to change based on business needs):

  • Saturdays and Sundays from 12:00pm – 9:30pm

ABOUT YOU

Our Highly Qualified Candidate: Our highly qualified candidate has a minimum of one-year of experience working in an inpatient psychiatric unit, psychiatric emergency services or a crisis stabilization unit. The candidate will have previous training in crisis prevention intervention techniques (CPI) or a similar training. Experience working with adults and children (0 to 17 years of age) experiencing mental health emergencies is ideal. The successful candidate has a current Crisis Prevention Institute (CPI) or a Management of Assaultive Behavior (MAB) certificate. The candidate is calm in a crisis setting and has experience participating with clinical professionals in patient de-escalation. The ideal candidate maintains an empathetic and helpful approach when interacting with CSU team members, patients, families and staff of other organizations.

Graduation from high school or the equivalent and one year of experience working with mentally ill and/or emotionally disturbed patients in a behavioral health care setting.

Note: Within the first 6 months of employment, incumbent must complete the on-site Crisis Prevention Intervention (CPI) training. Failure to successfully complete the training may be cause for termination.

Highly Desirable:

CERTIFICATES AND LICENSES: Management of Assaultive Behavior (MOAB) certification or an equivalent is highly desirable.

Disaster Service Workers: All County of Marin employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law (California Government Code Section 3100-3109). Employment with the County requires the affirmation of a loyalty oath to this effect. Employees are required to complete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned, and to return to work as ordered in the event of an emergency.
