General Laborer – Tri-State Paving – Hurricane, WV

Job Summary:

Performs general construction tasks involving physical labor at construction projects. May operate hand and power tools of all types: air hammers, earth tampers, and a variety of other equipment and instruments. May clean and prepare sites and cleaning up rubble and debris. Involves physical labor such as shoveling, raking concrete, laying asphalt, and heavy lifting. May be required to drive utility trucks and other moving equipment.

Work Schedule:

Monday–Friday / Start time 6:30 AM / Overtime and occasional weekends required.

Job Duties and Responsibilities:

· Gathers tools for the day. Takes rakes, lutes, shovels, spray cans of release agents and more to paver;

· Delivers water to the rollers, plate compactors, power broom and other machines as required and instructed;

· Assists in preparing for the day’s takeoff by clearing joints, brooming them, blowing them off and tacking them;

· Assists foreman with measuring and lining out the job for the day’s paving;

· Safely guides equipment operators within the work zone;

· Places mix by shovelful and lutes it smoothly into a patch or mat;

· Assists screed operator keeping an eye on the head of material by feeding material to the end gate and using a shovel to pull material out to end gate if necessary;

· Maintains cleanliness around the paver, shovels any spilled mix that could negatively affect the mat;

· Cleans area around excavation site;

· Ensures trucks are kept clean, including exterior, inside the cab, and windows/mirrors;

· Assists with cleaning equipment, tools, and spray cans. Fills tanks at the end of the shift if necessary and ensures all tools/materials are returned to tool truck for safekeeping;

· Sets up and strips forms in which concrete is poured to create walkways, walls, pillars, and other structures;

· Introduces rebar or wire mesh to reinforce the material, uses trowels and other tools to spread and smooth concrete, and mold expansion joins and edges;

· Saw cuts concrete and asphalt;

· Ensures a safe work environment in compliance with all safety policies and procedures using the appropriate tools and equipment for the task;

· Assists Concrete Finisher with concrete finishing;

· Reports any tool or equipment malfunction to foreman and/or supervisor;

· Wears required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) at all times; and

· Performs other duties as required or assigned.

Qualifications:

· One-year construction related experience;

· In-depth knowledge of construction procedures, equipment and OSHA guidelines necessary;

· Ability to read drawings, maps and plans related to streets, sidewalks, trails, drainage and traffic control;

· Must be able to follow OSHA safety standards and be safety conscious;

· Have the willingness to work in a team environment and assist co–workers or supervisors with other duties;

· 18 years or older and legally able to work in the United States;

· Active and valid driver’s license with acceptable driving history as determined at the sole discretion of the company; and

· Employment is contingent on successful completion of a drug screen.

Physical Requirements:

· The individual must be able to wear and properly utilize appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) as required by the work performed and location of work being done. This includes, but is not limited to, hard hat, safety glasses, ear plugs, and steel toed shoes;

· Must be able to hear adequately enough to be alerted by horns, sirens, shouting, or any other noise that is meant to convey a safety warning; If corrective device is required to achieve this level of hearing, the employee must be able to wear PPE without interfering with the corrective device or the required PPE;

· Ability to lift, stand, walk, kneel, stoop, and squat for long periods of time as well as climb or balance at heights up to 60 feet from ground level;

· Good coordination between hands, eyes, and feet to guide equipment in situations where precision is required;

· Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects;

· Frequent lifting and reaching, sometimes as much as 80 lbs.;

· Ability to exert one’s self physically over long periods of time;

· Remaining calm during emergencies and respond appropriately as circumstance dictate;

· Exposure to dust, dirt, fumes, noise, and sludge and climbing up and down ladders and equipment;

· Adapting to outdoor conditions and prolonged exposure;

· Regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts; and

· Ability to work more than 40 hours in any given week including weekend assignments as required;
