Senior Audio Visual Technician – The National Academies – Irvine, CA

Reviews meetings database daily for room requirements and provides advanced audio visual (AV) support including providing coverage and quality control checks for the organization’s meetings, webcasting, press conferences, and videoconferencing. Sets-up and adjusts highly technical audio-visual equipment according to meeting requirements. Works with clients to document and fulfill requirements for special events. Performs videoconference testing with remote sites. Troubleshoots problems of a complex nature, such as audio quality and videoconferencing diagnostics. Instructs users in basic equipment operation, and use of in-house Creston projection systems. Performs routine maintenance of equipment. Maintains appropriate records and inventory.

Applying specific technical knowledge, incumbent performs assigned tasks requiring the identification and analysis of various factors to recommend and implement best course of action. While some tasks are complex, most decision-making can be made within pre-determined approaches. Proceeds on own initiative in compliance with policies, procedures, and practices, but receives guidance or expertise from supervisor or higher-level staff when needed. May lead and provide functional guidance to lower level audio-visual employees.

ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:

1. Monitors database to review upcoming meetings and conferences. Meets with coordinators to discuss meeting needs and special requirements. Plans and implements advanced AV support to ensure special requirements are met.

2. Conducts quality control checks for meetings, webcasting, and press conferences, and videoconferencing. Ensures conference rooms are fully operable before each conference. Interacts with staff during meetings to ensure requirements are met.

3. Provides staff with assistance and instruction on using AV and personal computer (PC) equipment and videoconferencing.

4. Operates sound system, audio-visual equipment, and lights in the National Academy of Sciences (NAS) auditorium. Sets up stage in the auditorium.

5. Prepares sound system, mixing board, and other equipment for National Academies’ press conferences.

6. Performs regular cleaning and maintenance and minor repair of equipment. Performs advanced troubleshooting, diagnosing systemic problems.

7. Tests videoconferencing systems with remote sites prior to actual events.

8. Operates sound systems and monitors streaming for webcasts.

9. Works with vendors to provide additional services for National Academies’ events.

10. Conducts training sessions with staff on conference technology.

11. Maintains and inventories equipment and supplies.

12. May provide basic computer support, including software support and troubleshooting (Windows, Microsoft Office, etc.) as well as hardware support and troubleshooting (printers, monitors, wireless networks, etc.).

13. May instruct, direct, and check the work of lower-level audio-visual technicians.

JOB SPECIFICATIONS

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Thorough knowledge of audio visual systems. Moderate computer knowledge. Ability to solve intellectual problems of some variety and complexity using originality and ingenuity. Ability to exercise some latitude for independent judgment and action. Ability to work successfully in a team environment. Ability to develop relationships with co-workers and employees in other National Academies’ departments through effective communication. Excellent communication skills with a proven ability to effectively interact with all levels of employees.

Minimum Education/Training Requirements: High school diploma, GED, or equivalent knowledge.

Minimum Experience: Three years of related AV experience, preferably with Creston equipment or equivalent.

Physical Capabilities: Sets up Audio Visual equipment and tables and chairs for conference rooms and other areas. Ability to use job related equipment to carry out essential functions.

Required Licenses, Certification or Registration: None.

Supervisory Responsibilities/Controls: Reports to Manager , Audio Visual Services. Supervisor is available to organize work, set priorities and objectives, and to assist in problem resolution.

Work Environment: Office environment with occasional travel between National Academies’ facilities and to off-site locations. Work often requires flexible hours, overtime hours, and rotation between the National Academies’ building sites.
