Location: Tennessee Pedigree Complex, Deer Lodge, TN

Schedule: Wednesday through Saturday, including holidays

Hours: 6:10am to 4:20pm

Work schedule is subject to change based upon production needs.

Temporary starting wage: $12.20

Full Time Starting Wage: $13.60

Pay increase at 6 months: $15.30

Position Summary:

  • This position attends to and cares for the roosters and hens in a Pedigree house, maintains the overall condition of the house, and gathers eggs for incubation in accordance with R&D production objectives. Other duties may also be assigned based on business needs.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • These collect eggs from nest boxes and pen floors. The collection process requires frequent bending, stooping, and kneeling to remove eggs from the floor. Pens should be checked for eggs at least 8 times throughout the day. Check hens in new flocks for evidence of production and place them in nests for training. Observe shell color, texture, and size of egg and separate and record accordingly. Mark eggs for line and source identification while putting eggs in plastic hatchery flats. Record and dispose of substandard eggs as instructed. Pack identified eggs in plastic hatchery flats and place in farm egg cases along with matching ticket for pickup by the egg facility at scheduled times throughout the day. (40%)
  • These perform routine housekeeping duties as outlined on the Daily Checklist that include but are not limited to: turning shavings, changing shavings, sweeping, dusting, removing trash, and light maintenance. Check equipment, partitions, and house infrastructure daily to ensure sound integrity and functionality. Repair or report any deficiencies discovered. Performs routine quality assurance procedures to monitor egg quality and boot room and work area sanitation such as collecting weekly feed samples and environmental swabs. (20%)
  • These feed and water birds according to schedules. This includes ensuring that feeders and drinkers are accessible to birds and that feed is distributed evenly. Weigh out and distribute feed exactly according to the outlined ration for both hens and roosters daily. (10%)
  • These weigh hens and roosters weekly then calculate and record both individual and average weights and uniformity. The weighing process requires frequent bending and stooping to lift birds on and off the floor. Examine birds for signs of illness and treat them according to instructions. Administer nutrition supplements and medications as instructed. Record and dispose of dead birds as instructed. Record information according to instructions such as egg numbers, bird weight, medications, feed intake, and mortality. (10%)

Other Duties, Responsibilities, and Activities:

  • These may change or be assigned at any time with or without notice, such as: Maintain and assist with housekeeping standards in the working areas; inspect birds to determine quality and progress by weighing birds weekly; sanitation of storage areas, breakroom, boot rooms, equipment, and vehicles; moving birds, grounds-keeping and organizing breeder tags; properly euthanize selected or weak/ill birds in accordance with company policy (10%)

Bio-security/Safety Requirements:

  • The jobsite is a biosecure environment which requires showering, changing clothing and footwear before entering the facility. Appropriate clothing and footwear is provided by the Company. No jewelry may be worn on the jobsite except for medical ID jewelry and body piercings covered by appropriate clothing. Only body piercings covered by on-farm clothing are permitted. Must be willing to sign an agreement to avoid any avian species (chickens, ducks, birds, etc.). Must be willing to sign and abide by the Company Biosecurity and Company Animal Welfare Guidelines.

    During the current Pandemic (2020), all Team Members will be required to wear company issued facial coverings. Training will be provided to each Team Member specific to their job and their facility location in addition to signing an acknowledgement form they understand these expectations.

Physical Demands and Work Environment:

  • Physical: Must use safe lifting techniques. Must regularly lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and will occasionally be required to lift and/or move up to 50 pounds at times or push/pull wheeled skids of supplies up to 1000 pounds . While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for the majority of the shift on a concrete floor; walk; sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls; reach with hands and arms; balance; stoop; talk or hear; and drive a vehicle within the farm complex. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Tools and equipment: Vehicle, Pressure Washer, scale, leaf blower
  • Environment: Required to work on wet, slippery surfaces and also in hot, dry, dusty, wet and cold environments. Must maintain a high level of situational awareness while working around equipment and livestock.
  • Personal Protective Equipment Required: Safety glasses, Safety goggles, face shield, chemical gloves, waterproof apron, ear plugs/muffs and rubber boots are required for different tasks. NIOSH approved N95 particulate respirators may be worn as needed.
  • Chemicals Commonly used: Must be willing to use chemicals such as vitamin supplements, animal dye, and miscellaneous disinfectants (Synergize, Lysol, bleach, etc…)
  • Safety: TM is expected to follow all applicable safety policies and procedures. These include but are not limited to Hazard Communication, Respiratory Protection, LOTO and Personal Protective Equipment. TM is expected to identify, address and mitigate safety related risks.
