Medical Lab Scientist I – Developmental Lab – Penn State Health Milton S. Hershey Medical Center – Hershey, PA

The Medical Lab Scientist is responsible for performing complex laboratory tests on blood, body fluids, cells, and tissues. Scientists will identify bacteria, parasites, and other microorganisms, analyze chemical content of fluids, and cross match blood for transfusion and organ transplantation, as well as aseptically prepare cells for use in cellular therapies. The results of these tests are used in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease.

This Medical Lab Scientist position will be responsible for testing for SARS CoV-2 on a variety of molecular platforms. This will include preanalytical specimen processing and the analytical steps. This testing will occur mainly in the new dedicated COVID-19 testing laboratory with some COVID-19 testing also occurring in the main Virology Laboratory as needed. Molecular experience preferred but not required as the testing is done on highly automated instruments.

INIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Bachelor’s degree in Medical Laboratory Science, Medical Technology, or Clinical Laboratory Science required.

MLS (ASCP) – Medical Laboratory Scientist, American Society of Clinical Pathology, CLT (HHS) Clinical Laboratory Technologist, Health and Human Services Certification, and/or category specific technologist certifications offered by the American Society of Pathology such as BB (ASCP), C(ASCP), H(ASCP), M(ASCP), and MB(ASCP) required.

Must be ASCP Certified within one year of employment at the Penn State Hershey Department of Pathology.

Good customer service and communication skills required

Must be self-motivated and able to prioritize work.

Applicants trained outside of the United States must provide documentation of equivalency evaluation of their education and training to ensure it is equivalent to CLIA requirements. The equivalency evaluations will be performed by a nationally recognized organization. Ex: National Association Credential Evaluations Services, Inc. (NACES), the Association of International Credential Evaluators, Inc. (AICE). The applicants is responsible for paying the cost of the equivalency evaluation.

Laboratory experience in a hospital setting preferred
