Horizons at Carolina Day AmeriCorps VISTA – Carolina Day School – Asheville, NC

Horizons at Carolina Day (CDS) is part of a network of Horizons programs. These partnerships between public and independent schools have a 3-fold goal: to address the challenge of summer learning loss and to help close the achievement and opportunity gaps among children growing up in poverty. In summer 2021, Horizons at CDS will run a 6-week academic program on the Carolina Day School campus for children in grades K to 3. (The program grows by one grade each year.) We also do after-school tutoring and events with families throughout the school year. Students who begin in grade K continue in the program, building deep relationships, skills, knowledge, and confidence, which lead nationally to a 97% high school graduation rate and a 91% rate of attending college or post-secondary training. Horizons at CDS is seeking a motivated, committed individual who is passionate about promoting equity in education and opportunity. This opportunity is perfect for someone looking for essential experience and responsibility that exceeds what is offered in an entry-level non-profit position. Because of this, the candidate should have some background of volunteer service, as well as the desire to take on responsibilities that will challenge themselves and make an impact on the community. The VISTA will work directly with the Executive Director of the Horizons program and have the opportunity to take on responsibilities and gain experience in areas of program management, marketing and communications, grant writing, program development, and systems enhancement. The AmeriCorps VISTA will have the opportunity to: attend trainings and conferences; network with other area nonprofits; connect with community leaders; explore new marketing and communications platforms; and participate in activities, sports and arts events at Carolina Day, the pre-K thru 12 independent school hosting the Horizons program.
