Administer medications to residents as ordered by the attending physician, under the direction of the charge nurse and the Director of Nursing. The administration of medications shall be in accordance with established nursing standards, the policies, procedures, and practices of this facility, and the requirements of this state.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Accurately and safely prepare, administer, and document the oral and/or topical medications that are commonly used in this facility and that may be ordered for resident use.
  • Ensure that no medication is administered without a written, signed and dated order from an attending licensed physician.
  • Verify the identity of the resident before administering the medication/treatment.
  • Verify that prescribed medication for one resident is not administered to another.
  • Observe and verify that medication is ingested or applied, as directed.
  • Document any instance where prescribed medication is not administered, including reason(s) for refusal.
  • Assist with medication charting as directed by the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse, as directed.
  • Verify that adequate supply of floor stock medications, supplies, and equipment is on hand to meet the nursing needs of the residents. Report needs to the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse.
  • Order prescribed medications, supplies, and equipment as necessary, and in accordance with established procedures.
  • Verify that narcotic records are accurate for your shift.

o Follow facility policies and procedures regarding the destruction of medications.

  • Notify the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse of all drug and narcotic discrepancies noted on your shift.
  • Review medication cards for completeness of information, accuracy in the transcription of the physician’s order and adherence to stop order policies.
  • Immediately notify the Nurse Supervisor/Charge Nurse of any medication administration errors.
  • Assist in providing CAN duties, as needed.
  • Other special projects and duties, as assigned.


Job Requirements:

  • Current Medication Aide Certification or Current Nursing Assistant Certification from state.
  • Must have a current/active CPR certification.
  • Effective verbal and written English communication skills.
  • Customer service oriented with the ability to work well under pressure.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision, take initiative and make independent decisions.
  • Ability to deal with new tasks without the benefit of written procedures.
  • Approachable, flexible and adaptable to change.
  • Function independently, and have flexibility, personal integrity, and the ability to work effectively with employees and vendors.


Physical and Sensory Requirements:

  • Considerable physical activity:

o Requires heavy physical work; heavy lifting, pushing, or pulling required of objects up to fifty (50) or more pounds. Physical work is a primary part (more than 70%) of job.

o Push, pull, move, and/or lift a minimum of fifty (50) pounds to a minimum height of three (3) feet and be able to push, pull, move, and/or carry such weight a minimum distance of fifty (50) feet.

o Standing and/or walking for more than four (4) hours per day.

o Bending and/or stooping for more than one (1) hour at a time.
