Independence Rides Personal Driver Position – Part Time – Independence Rides – Detroit, MI

Friends of ITNDetroit dba Independence Rides is a nonprofit public charity (IRS 501.c.3) focused on providing dignified transportation independence for seniors and vision impaired adults in the Detroit metropolitan area. Though we normally provide rides for any reason, under the current COVID-19 restrictions we continue to provide necessary rides to medical appointments, pharmacy, and grocery shopping.

The ideal applicant for this part-time position has extra time on their hands and desires to use that time in service to seniors and vision impaired adults in Detroit area communities. This position pays $9.50 per ride ($19 per typical round-trip ride), plus $0.30 per mile for some longer distance rides when the customer is in the vehicle. Schedules are very flexible, based on available ride requests. Currently most ride requests are during week days (Monday through Friday). This position reports to the Executive Director of Independence Rides, and is supported by the Rides Coordinator.

Overall Role:

  • Drive Independence Rides customers (seniors age 60 and older, and visually impaired adults) to desired destinations within the greater Detroit area.
  • Most drivers will provide these rides using their own vehicles. Independence Rides provides additional insurance to cover the vehicle and all occupants.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Providing safe, comfortable, and dignified transportation
  • Be ready to provide walking assistance to-and-from the vehicle for any customer who requests it
  • Keeping a positive attitude with your customers, interacting with them with sensitivity and patience
  • Keeping your vehicle clean
  • Maintaining confidentiality of Independence Rides customers, volunteers, and staff
  • Being on time for all rides and accurately reporting your mileage to the Rides Coordinator
  • Wearing your Independence Rides ID
  • Maintaining regular communication with the Rides Coordinator about all ride situations
  • Abide by the standard organizational policies in the Independence Rides Driver’s Handbook

Required Qualifications:

  • Must have a valid driver’s license and a minimum of 5 years driving experience
  • Able to lift and stow a walker, and to carry packages such as grocery bags
  • Personal references from two non-relatives
  • Proof of liability insurance for your vehicle
  • Current registration and inspection sticker on vehicle (if applicable)
  • Must be fluent in English, including reading, writing, and speaking
  • All applicants must submit to a driving and criminal background check

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Able to lift and stow a folding wheelchair
  • Experience driving or working with seniors and/or people with disabilities
