SSSD has an opening for a Radiation Effects Analysis & Laboratory Section Manager to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, CA.

The Radiation Effects Analysis & Laboratory (REAL) Section Manager is a “dual-hat” Engineering Manager, responsible for both section management (up to 50% of time) and lab management responsibilities (50% or more of time). Along with being the General Manager of the Radiation Test Operations (RTO) laboratory, the Section Manager is also a member of the Space Systems Sector Specialty Systems Engineering Department.

Leadership skills are required to manage and counsel section staff and interns. The Section Manager shall be the functional leadership contact for the Specialty Systems Engineering Department and will support and implement activities supporting REAL engineering initiatives, reporting directly to the Specialty Systems Engineering Department Manager.

This Radiation Effects Analysis & Laboratory (REAL) Section Manager will be responsible for managing a group of radiation effects engineers performing analysis and test. This section will be focused on analysis, simulation and verification via testing of radiation effects for air and space systems as the team members work closely with their counterparts in the associated Nuclear Weapon Effects (NWE) and Space & Nuclear Effects Simulation (SNES) Sections, driving program performance in this tightly-linked domain. These three sections will collaborate and coordinate resources and support, developing a unified vision and executing a global strategy for growth, standardization and meeting program needs.

Both space and nuclear environmental threats will be simulated by radiation testing with key environmental considerations including Total Ionizing Dose, Single Event Effects of Protons, Neutrons and Heavy Ions, Prompt Dose, System Generated EMP and Displacement Damage.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Perform resource planning and staffing to meet program demands. Become a magnet for radiation engineering talent utilizing career fairs, social networking and college hiring events.
  • Promote team member development; including skills training, professional seminar sponsorship, and modernize learning material. Be their advocate for career advancement by promoting knowledge sharing and mentor / protégé relationships.
  • Execute performance management, including employee goal setting, feedback solicitation, annual reviews, and compensation planning and issues resolution
  • Manage all financial aspects of the Radiation Test Operations Service Center including budget, rate updates, labor forecast, equipment/supply forecast, commercial sales, working with Service Center Business Management team, etc.
  • Interface with program customers to understand program needs, challenges, schedules, milestones, resources to meet test deadlines
  • Coordinate internal resources as well as with external test facilities to meet program needs. Ensure management (Program & Functional) kept apprised of test facility availability/outlook (onsite & offsite)
  • Identify and acquire appropriate test equipment via rental or purchase (
  • Serve on the Radiation Safety Committee, manage and own radiation analysis & test processes, identify and execute lab modernization strategies.
  • Work in lock step with the section members and managers of the Space and Nuclear Effects Simulation & Laboratory Section as well as the Nuclear Weapon Effects Section
  • Drive to a collective vision, organizational strategic plan and execution with a growth mindset
  • Establish and grow strategic relationships with Academia, Industry Partners as well as with Northrop Grumman Enterprise teams nationwide
  • Coordinate manpower resources in support of various program and functional initiatives
  • Provide technical, operational, and functional leadership of the section while exemplifying the Northrop Grumman leadership characteristics
  • Set performance standards and expectations, promoting engagement and development of section members
  • Help resolve technical as well as operational issues
  • Coordinate functional responses to program reviews (SRR, PDR, CDR, IDR, IRT, NAR/ICE, etc.) & proposal support
  • Resolve personnel matters such as work assignments, performance & salary review, and hiring of new section members
  • Hold ultimate responsibility for all REAL section activities

Qualifications:

Basic Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline with 5+ years of engineering experience in the aerospace industry OR
  • Master’s degree in STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Math) discipline with 3+ years of engineering experience in the aerospace industry

Candidate must have, and be able to maintain the following active U.S. Government security clearances:

  • Dept. of Defense Secret level with a background investigation date within 10 years OR
  • Dept. of Energy L clearance with a background investigation date within 10 years

AND

  • SCI access with a Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within 5 years OR
  • Single Scope Background Investigation (SSBI) completed within 5 years

The REAL manager should have experience in electronics testing, space radiation effects analysis, and understand strategic threat considerations.

  • Demonstrated management or leadership experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Bachelors of Science Degree OR higher in Electrical Engineering, Physics, Nuclear Engineering or closely related technical discipline from an accredited institution
  • Experience with the following tools: PSpice, AX9, LabView, LabWindows, Python
  • Experience with electronic component test equipment such as oscilloscopes, power supplies, semiconductor automated test systems
  • Experience with dose mapping, ray tracing and other space environment prediction tools for micrometeoroids, orbital debris, and atomic oxygen
  • A solid, foundational background in both natural radiation effects as well as nuclear hardness and survivability
  • Knowledge of the physics associated with radiation effects in semiconductor devices is a plus
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills of the English language is desired; Strong team-building/partnership skills
  • Ability to create inclusive teams with engaged team members
  • Ability to partner across organizations
  • Ability to communicate upwards, downwards and across organizational levels
