About Bear Eye Center

Bear Eye Center opened in 1992 by Dr. W. Lee MacKewiz. For over 25 years, this practice has provided full-service optometry to families and residents in New Castle County of all ages, insurances, and visual/medical diagnoses. As a well-respected business in the community, this practice focuses on medical optometry and specializes in glaucoma, ocular disease and ocular trauma. Centrally located in a free-standing building on Pulaski Highway, the practice is easily accessible from I-95, US-13, and DE-1. To support the practice’s continued growth and maintain the gold-standard service that Bear Eye Center patients know and expect, Dr. MacKewiz is looking to add an additional provider to the highly-trained staff five employees.

The practice uses state-of-the-art diagnostic technology and vision correction products to diagnose and treat a wide array of ocular conditions. Fully suited with top-of-the-line optical equipment, this practice recently added a Maestro OCT, capable of imaging the retina and anterior segment. Online appointment scheduling and office communications are offered via text messaging. Patients can enjoy a family-friendly shopping experience as they browse a wide selection of eyewear from the optical boutique—plus the practice carries over 1,000 frames from well-known manufacturers.

About the opening

Bear Eye Center is seeking a full-time Associate Optometrist who is passionate about providing personalized and individualized care to ensure excellent eye health and vision care for all patients. The current office hours are 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Monday and Wednesday; 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday; and 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. Friday. In this role, you will provide full-scope optometry including in-depth eye exams; diagnosing and treating eye conditions; and, prescribing glasses and contact lenses. A candidate with experience in treating glaucoma, ocular diseases and ocular trauma would be a complimentary addition to the practice. This is a unique opportunity for you to see a wide variety of patients and conditions that require medical treatment. For the right candidate, a future ownership opportunity may be available.

To be successful in this role, you must demonstrate leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, as well as compassion for patient health and safety. The ideal candidate will want to continuously develop his/her skills through mentorship with experienced doctors, and willing to integrate new techniques and innovations that improve patient care and services.

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Eligible for Delaware State Licensure
  • Glaucoma treatment
  • Ocular disease and ocular trauma treatment
  • Residency in ocular disease preferred (not required)
  • New graduates will be considered
