Director of Nursing – Acute Care

Department: Acute Care FLSA Status: Exempt Reports To: CEO

Position Summary

As a clinical leader, the Nursing Director will be accountable for ensuring that Acute Care RNs, LPN’s, Certified Nursing Assistants, and support staff are all adhering to clinical protocols and following best practices. The Nursing Director will also play a leading role in developing, improving, and continually supporting the education initiatives of Acute Care. You will act as a coach and mentor to the nurses, drawing out the skills and talent in the department. Strong administrative skills will also be needed for this role. The Department Director will take the leading position in developing and controlling the departmental budget as well as ensuring the financial performance for the unit. The DON works with other departments such as, Radiology and the Laboratory team to ensure appropriate patient care and services are being performed as best as possible.

The DON must possess strong leadership qualities that instill trust and confidence into the Nursing Team and Patients.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Responsible for determining own learning needs for continuing professional growth and participate in education activities, which maintain competency and currency in practice areas.
  • Interprets, utilizes and maintains the standard of nursing care.
  • Applies principles of the nursing procedures and role models nursing excellence as a staff resource.
  • Supervises Acute staff and assists with decision-making to ensure safe patient care.
  • Contributes to nursing, actively participations on committees, attendance at designated meetings and offers recommendations for improvement.
  • Uses communication in problem-solving and conflict resolution among staff, providers, patients, support personnel and community members.
  • Prepares budget and implements the control and effective utilization of physical and financial resources to assure maximum operation effectiveness of Acute Care department within their budgetary guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of relevant regulatory requirements, CMS standards for critical access hospitals and swing bed program, Wyoming Health Authority nurse staffing laws, National Patient Safety Goals.
  • Ensures compliance with regulations governing departments and the rules of their accrediting bodies by continually monitoring activities and initiating changes as required
  • Motivates staff in a positive manner towards a higher level of performance. Maintains and promotes professionalism through positive interpersonal relationships, effective time management, leadership skills, appearance, attendance and education pursuits. Develops subordinates by direct teaching, coaching, guidance and by recognizing needs for staff development.
  • Demonstrates a professional commitment by initiating, developing and maintaining inter-and intra-departmental personnel and medical staff in communicating the plan of care and patient outcomes.
  • Maintains cooperative relationship with the community, state and other hospital and nursing home professional associations.
  • Supports, participates and assists with the facility’s continuous quality improvement program.
  • Function in a friendly and caring manner under stressful conditions.
  • Must be able to deal with visitors, patients and employees in a courteous and respectful manner at all times.
  • Must be flexible and able to adapt to sometimes rapid and frequently changing work conditions.
  • Works toward a resolution of personnel issues with assistance from HR as needed.
  • Write reports, contribute to grant applications, update other documents as needed.
  • Maintains self-motivation and sustains a high level of momentum.
  • Liaison between nurses, physicians and hospital administration.
  • Conducts coaching and disciplinary action as needed.
  • Any additional duties pertaining to daily operations of the hospital as assigned by the CEO.

  • Assists in hiring new employees as needed
  • Shares responsibility of covering floor shifts as needed.

Qualifications

Education

  • Required: Bachelor of Science in Nursing, clinical nursing experience in the acute care setting.
  • Preferred: Master of Science degree in Nursing (MSN) or related education such as business administration, healthcare administration or healthcare education (MBS, MHA, MHE).

Licenses and Certifications

  • Required: Active and unencumbered RN license in Wyoming
  • BLS, ACLS, PALS, TNCC

Experience

  • At least 3 years in related health field

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Excellent patient care skills.
  • Professional and discrete manner at all times.
  • Ability to communicate effectively and verbally as well as the ability to follow verbal and written instructions
  • Must have experience with Electronic Health Records Program, Outlook and other Microsoft Office Programs.
