EDUCATION
– Sixty (60) or more college credit hours preferred.


JOB SUMMARY/PURPOSE:
To assist teachers, students and school office personnel with routine tasks. Also, assist the librarian with all clerical, technical, and secretarial services necessary for the successful operation of the Library/Media Center, and to observe students during their free time on the playground in order to make sure that activities are carried out safely.


ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

  • Performs routine clerical duties to include basic typing tasks.
  • Serves as an assistant to other office support staff.
  • Performs various student attendance procedures.
  • Assists with handling pertinent activities needed for your school/building program.
  • Handles calls from the public and staff and disperse relevant information.
  • Takes messages and/or refers calls to staff members
  • Takes student attendance calls and calls parents who have not reported their child’s absence.
  • Handles student sign in and admit slips for students who arrive after the school day has started.
  • Monitors student sign-outs for students leaving school throughout the day.
  • Monitors visitor procedures.
  • Performs filing.
  • May be required to stamp textbooks.
  • Makes photocopies as directed.
  • Assists school staff with the counting of cash from fundraisers and school activities.
  • Assists staff with the counting of votes from various school activities.
  • Sorts and distributes district and U.S. Mail.
  • Promotes good public relations by personal appearance, attitude, and conversation.
  • Maintains respect for confidential information.
  • May be required to use a computer to look up schedules, addresses, and other pertinent information.
  • Promotes good safety practices and procedures.
  • Performs related work as required.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Ability to work well with young people and staff.
  • Training or experience in library work preferred.
  • Good typing, filing, and general office skills.
  • Possess good spelling and proofreading skills.
  • Have good organizational skills.
  • Have excellent human relations skills.
  • Possess sensitivity toward children.
  • Have some previous experience of working with children.

DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:


The Building Support Aide is responsible for the following:

  • Process materials.
  • Inventory library materials.
  • Supervise student help and volunteers.
  • Attend circulation desk, i.e., checking books in and out.
  • Shelve library materials.
  • Assist students in locating materials.
  • Assist teachers in locating and gathering materials.
  • Perform bibliographic and literature search for students and teachers.
  • Keep records – statistics, periodicals, purchase orders, and inventory.
  • Type for technical services, acquisition and at the librarian’s request.
  • Check out AV equipment.
  • File records, periodicals, catalog cards, etc.
  • Perform minor repair of books.
  • Maintain the appearance of the Library/Media Center.
  • Prepare displays and bulletin boards.
  • Prepare overdue notices.
  • Read stories to and/or work with groups of students.
  • Assist teachers with videotaping.
  • Make minor AV repairs.
  • Make data entry/removal from a prepared copy.
  • Other duties as assigned


The Building Support Aide is responsible for the following:

  • Type correspondence.
  • Compile lists and rosters as requested.
  • Type field trip permission slips and other forms.
  • Duplicate materials using the copy machine and distribute it.
  • Assist in the school clinic when needed.
  • Assist with answering the office phone.
  • Sort and distribute mail.
  • File
  • Help maintain a permanent record system for students.
  • Do lunch verification.
  • Perform playground and cafeteria duty as assigned.
  • Perform data entry tasks as assigned.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Building Support Aide is responsible for the following:

  • Supervise students during recess time on the playground (ball games and general playtime).
  • Supervise students entering and leaving the building to recess time and before school.
  • Report all injuries to the Nurse, Administrator and Office Professional for record-keeping and advising parents of injuries.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • The Building Support Aide is responsible for the following:
  • Help to maintain a safe environment in the lunchroom.
  • Manage uncooperative students with school administrators’ assistance.
  • Handle problems effectively.
  • Observe student behavior at all times.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
  • The Building Support Aide in the Child Development Centers and full-day preschool is responsible for the following:
  • Help to maintain a safe environment in the child development center.
  • Supervise children during nap time.
  • Serve snacks and lunch to children with their assistance.
  • Clean tables before and after children eat.
  • Take children to the bathroom; assist them with using the toilet and washing hands; change diapers/pull-ups.
  • Help teachers set up for and provide activities in classrooms.
  • Assist teachers with clerical tasks, e.g., make copies, call in lunch count, place family book orders.
  • Maintain inventory and order supplies, e.g., paper, utensils.
  • Shop at a grocery store as needed.
  • Clean classroom materials, e.g., toys, paintbrushes.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

The Building Support Aide in the Locker Room and Secondary Cafe is responsible for the following:

  • Supervision of students in the locker room and cafeteria
  • Assists teachers in devising special strategies for reinforcing material or skills.
  • Assists with independent study, enrichment work, and intervention work assigned by the teacher.
  • Assists with the supervision of students during emergency drills and assemblies.
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS: (also see Physical Demands Checklist, attached)

While performing the duties of this position, the employee is regularly required to stand, walk, sit, talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to reach with hands and arms, stoop, kneel, crouch and lift up to 35 pounds. Specific vision abilities required included close vision, distance vision, the ability to adjust and focus and depth perception. Specific auditory abilities required include normal conversation, phone conversation and ability to isolate voices in multiple conversations.


WORK ENVIRONMENT / CONDITIONS:

The work setting involves performance in a school environment with various levels of staff and students. The accomplishment of tasks is often interrupted by persons with special and/or immediate needs. Work conditions feature frequent demands to address conditions, problems, and conflicts that involve students and parents with diverse backgrounds and needs.
