Plant Maintenance Technician II – City of St. Petersburg – Odessa, FL

This is advanced, specialized and skilled technical workin the maintenance and repair of treatment and pumping instrumentation and equipment used in water and wastewater treatment plants and pumping stations, with an emphasis on advanced electronics and electrical systems, including equipment calibration from component level to system loop calibrations at the Cosme Water Plant in Northwest Hillsborough County. Work involves inspecting, servicing, calibrating and maintaining sophisticated SCADA equipment, programmable logic controllers (PLC’s), variable frequency drives (VFD’s), electrical systems, telemetering devices, monitoring instruments and control instrumentation; understanding PLC ladder logic and troubleshooting PLC process instrumentation related to water flow, tank level, and pressure; analyzing and diagnosing mechanical and electrical/electronic equipment malfunctions; estimating manpower, materials and supplies; providing training and guidance to skilled maintenance staff; maintaining records of inspection and repair activities including regulatory reports, calibration certificates and safety; and assisting with planning, scheduling and performing a preventive maintenance program for all plant equipment. Due to the sensitivity and required accuracy, work requires considerable independent judgment; the ability to make methodical, thorough inspections to determine operating conditions and needed repairs; and the ability to formulate and successfully carry out repair plans. Due to the critical responsibilities of this classification, an employee in this position must be able to report to work outside of normally scheduled work hours to respond to emergency conditions and/or address urgent needs, at the discretion of management.


Salary:
$24.18 – $35.33 hourly

To Qualify

Minimum Qualifications. Applicants must:

  • Possess a high school diploma or GED equivalency supplemented with the completion of advanced technical course work in electronics, instrumentation and electrical systems.

  • Possess and maintain a valid State of Florida Class “B” Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) -or- be willing to obtain a Class “B” temporary permit after a conditional offer and before hire, and then obtain the Class “B” license within five and one half (5 1/2) months of hire.

  • Have considerable progressive experience at the journey-man level in the maintenance and repair of industrial plant or water and/or wastewater treatment equipment, monitoring instruments, electrical devices and mechanical systems including troubleshooting experience using the Hart Protocol.

  • Have knowledge of plant instrumentation control and monitoring equipment and systems, including repair, preferably including experience with PLCs, SCADA, VFDs and telemetering devices.

  • Have considerable knowledge of the occupational hazards and safety precautions of the trade.

  • Have experience and knowledge of electronics communication equipment, including PLC’s Allen Bradley Communication Protocols.

  • Be available to work varied shifts and overtime, to include evenings, weekends and holidays and be able to report to work to respond to emergency conditions and/or to address urgent needs.

  • Possess computer and data entry skills.

  • Be able to understand and effectively carry out oral and written instructions.

  • Acknowledge this position is designated as Emergency Critical (EC) and if hired into the position, you must be immediately available to the department before, during, and after a declared emergency and/or disaster.


Desirable Qualifications. Preferred Applicants:

  • Are able to read and understand blueprints, construction diagrams and schematics.

  • Have experience leading and instructing subordinates in plant maintenance work.

  • Have experience troubleshooting PLC and understanding PLC ladder logic.

  • Have experience calibrating and troubleshooting process instrumentation related to water flow, tank level and pressure.

  • Are skilled in the use of the specialized tools of the trade.

  • Are able to understand and follow oral and written instructions, communicate clearly and concisely (orally and in writing), maintain accurate and detailed records, and input information into a computer terminal following written instructions.
