Providence is calling an Lactation and Infant Nutrition Counselor (Labor And Delivery, Days, 0.0 FTE) to Providence Valdez Medical Center in Valdez, Alaska. We are a community of caregivers delivering every day on our Mission to provide compassionate care that is accessible for all – especially those who are poor and vulnerable.
In this position you will:
- Maintain knowledge of advances in lactation practices. Maintain skills competency as evidenced by completion of annual skills checklist. Complete self-evaluation for the annual review process.
- Provide basic breast, bottle, and formula feeding guidance as well as infant nutrition and overall developmental guidance appropriate for the inpatient setting, the infant’s age, and developmental stage.
- Provide breast pumps usage and maintenance, education and guidance, supplemental education and guidance, and access to breast pumps for loan, all as appropriate.
- Maintain knowledge of available community resources and refers patients as appropriate. Build and maintain rapport with patient and provides reassurance. Communicate concerns regarding patient status to direct caregiver RN staff, physician or provider as clinically appropriate, following hospital guidelines to ensure that appropriate follow-up care is arranged.
- Initiate and complete accurate patient documentation for the inpatient medical record prior to patient discharge.
- Follow protocols on tele health usage modalities and routine telephone support calls. Provide treatment and develops treatment plans for maternal issues related to breasts and nipples as needed. Communicate concerns regarding participants’ status to physician or provider as clinically appropriate. Follow hospital guidelines to ensure that appropriate follow-up care is arranged.

Qualifications:
Required qualifications for this position include:
- H.S. Diploma or GED in Certified Lactation Counselor (CLC)
- Basic Life Support
- Current certification as a Registered Lactation Consultant through the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE).
- 3 months of experience
About the Providence Valdez Medical Center
Providence Valdez Medical Center is a 21 bed Critical Access Hospital and we employ about 100 people (87 FTE’s). Of those 21 beds, 10 are licensed Long Term Care beds and 11 are Acute/Swing Beds. We have four physicians on our active medical staff who practice out of the Valdez Medical Clinic. Our average daily census is three-four inpatients and 20-30 outpatients. Our facility contains an emergency room, labor room, postpartum, nursery, cardiac room, orthopedic, and med/surg rooms. We also have an operating room for emergency surgeries and elective procedures, C-sections, hernias and appendectomies. All our beds are licensed for “swing bed” status of which 1-3 are usually occupied.
