Job Description
Selected candidates are required to pass a Reading Comprehension Test, Physical Examination, Psychological Evaluation, and In-depth Background Investigation. Successful candidates must be of good moral character and must have no serious criminal history, which would prevent them from being able to maintain a dual role as a sworn Law Enforcement Officer and certified Detention Officer from the North Carolina Sheriff’s Education and Training Standards Commission. Candidates must also adhere to the standards set by Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Employment is contingent on the successful completion of the mandated 10-week training to include classroom instructions and daily physical activities (running, push-ups, sit-ups, heavy lifting, etc.…).
Primary Responsibilities of Entry Level Deputy Sheriff’s is in Arrest Admissions.


Minimum Qualifications:

NC BLET certification required prior to applying for D/S position
Candidate must have a High School Diploma, or G.E.D. equivalence.
Candidate must possess a valid driver’s license and clean driving history.
Candidate must be able to pass a drug screening and complete medical examination by a licensed physician, including psychological testing and evaluation.
Candidate must be 21 years of age prior to hire date.
Candidate must be a U.S. citizen or Naturalization Certification, if applicable.
Candidate must be able to pass our agency physical fitness and comprehension test.
Candidate must have a clean criminal record to include no felony convictions.
Candidate must not have had a DWI conviction within the past five years and no more than two in a lifetime.
Candidate must have Honorable Military Discharge, if applicable.
Candidate must reside within 50 miles radius of the Sheriff’s Office Jail-Central
Candidate must pass the firearm qualification with a score of 80 or better
Incumbents are responsible for enforcing the statutes of North Carolina, and all local and federal laws, as well as following the rules and regulations set forth by the Sheriff of Mecklenburg County. Incumbents may be assigned to various areas.


Special Requirements:

This is a posting for a permanent night shift position with the Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office. Selected candidate must successfully complete a thorough background investigation.
Incumbent will work a 12.33-hour schedule which translates to (7) 12.33-hour shifts in a (14) day period totaling approximately 86.33 hours. Permanent night shift personnel will have an opportunity to work towards seniority which allows them to be assigned to a permanent day shift position. The permanent night shift personnel are given a shift premium that equates to an additional $1.00 per hour for their regularly scheduled shift assignment. Night Shift is from 6:40 pm until 7:00 am.


POSITION SPECIFICS:

Detention Officers/ Deputy Sheriffs will receive an additional 5% upon successfully completing the State-Mandated DOCC, Post School, and MCSO Post In-facility Training Course.


DOCC- Detention Officer Certification Course:


This course is mandated by The North Carolina Sheriff’s Standards for all newly hired Detention Officers and Deputy Sheriffs in order to become certified. The course is designed to cover all aspects of detention ranging from Physical Fitness to Legal Aspects. There are 23 separate blocks of instruction for a total of 180 hours and it is followed by a comprehensive state administered test consisting of 200 questions.


Post School:

The Mecklenburg County Sheriff’s Office Training Academy requires that our recruits complete an additional 19 courses of instructions which is an additional 169 hours. This is known as the Post School. Some of the courses the recruits take during the POST School are Ground Fighting, Expandable Baton, and Pepper Spray.
This gives each recruit over 300 hours of training before reporting to their Duty assignment.


MCSO-In Facility Training:

The Facility Training will last approximately 6 weeks and will include the following: Facility Emergency Plans, Facility Paperwork, Overview of Policy & Procedures, Offender Management System, and hands on experience of running the housing units.

This training must be completed within 12 months from the date of employment.


The Sheriff’s Office works 24 hours per day on permanent shifts and you may be assigned to any shift on a permanent basis at the discretion of the Commanding Officer/Sheriff.
