ESSENTIAL SKILLS/FUNCTIONS TO PERFORM JOB FUNCTIONS (Must be able to explain and/or demonstrate how, with or without reasonable accommodations, that the essential functions of the job can be performed.)

Must be able to relate to other people beyond giving and receiving instructions by: (I) getting along with co-workers, or peers without exhibiting behavioral extremes; (2) performing work activities requiring negotiating, instructing, supervising, persuading or communicating with others; and (3) responding appropriately to criticism from a supervisor.

Responsible for security for City of Corpus Christi residents by patrolling streets, commercial and residential areas on assigned beat driving a car, motorcycle, bicycle in the prevention, detection and investigation of felony or misdemeanor law violations and other misconduct.

  • Respond to calls for the protection of life and property by equally enforcing all City, County, State, and Federal laws regardless of race, color, creed and sexual.orientation; apprehending violators, issuing warnings or citations, rescuing and rendering first aid to the injured and summoning ambulances and other law enforcement vehicles.
  • Arrest and detain suspects by employing a level of physical force necessary only to control individuals as warranted under circumstances; handcuffing and searching individuals, advising individuals of Miranda warnings, and transporting to appropriate detention facility.
  • Responds to personally sensitive calls such as family disturbances, missing persons, and domestic violence by exercising caution relative to personal safety, safety of others on the scene, taking appropriate steps to calm the parties as necessary to resolve the immediate situation.
  • Examine suspicious conditions by conducting primary searches of scenes of attempted or committed crimes for clues, questioning victims, witnesses and suspects to develop leads.
  • Determine cause ofaccidents by taking measurements and drawing diagrams of scenes, inspecting vehicles involved, obtaining and analyzing information, and conducting hit-and-run follow up inquiries.
  • Assist in the preparation of felony and misdemeanor cases for filing of charges by compiling information on investigation findings, field interrogations, accident scenes; giving testimony in court proceedings or other proper law enforcement action.
  • Interact and work with citizens regarding existing and potential law enforcement and crime prevention problems by preserving good relationships with the general public, and continually taking an active role in educating the public regarding crime and crime prevention.
  • Maintain proficiency in all aspects of police work by attending scheduled in-service training, including qualifying with department issued firearms in compliance with State law and maintaining awareness of changing laws.
  • Maintains contact with police supervisory personnel by coordinating investigation activities, providing mutual assistance during emergency situations and providing general information about Department activities.

CORPUS CHRISTI POLICE DEPARTMENT MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education

  • High School Diploma or
  • (G.E.D.) General Educational Develpoment must be accompanied with 12 successfully completed college hours from an accredited college/university

Citizenship

The City of Corpus Christi requires that a Police Officer candidate be a United States citizen.

Residency

Police Officers may live outside the City limits of Corpus Christi, Texas, but must reside in such a location as to be able to reach City Hall within sixty (60) minutes by traveling in an automobile at posted speeds in ordinary weekday traffic.

Background

Corpus Christi Police Department Officers are entrusted with responsibility to keep our cities safe from crime and corruption. Therefore, a history of ethical and moral behavior is of the utmost importance. Your background will be looked at very closely. Candidates who have a history of unethical or immoral behavior will not be hired. You will be subjected to an intensive background evaluation, which will include, but is not limited to, the following:

Applicants for Police Officer shall be at least 20 years of age. Provided however, no applicant shall be admitted to a police academy unless they will be at least 21 years of age on the projected academy graduation date. Applicants must not have reached 45 years of age prior to a conditional offer of employment.

  •  Your past behavior and the choices you have made must demonstrate positive traits that will support your candidacy for Police Officer and reflect favorably on your character.
  •  You must have a history of lawful conduct.
  •  You must possess high standards of honesty and integrity as demonstrated by

your dealings with individuals and organizations. Falsifying, misrepresenting, or intentionally omitting information on any document or during the selection process will be cause for my disqualification and removal from the hiring process.

  • You must respect the rights of all people and have an appreciation for the diversity that characterizes Corpus Christi. A history of domestic violence, physical altercations, or discourteous, abusive, or violent treatment of others may indicate a lack of self-discipline, unwillingness or inability to cooperate, or a disregard for the rights of others.
  •  You must have a history of making responsible choices regarding the use of drugs and alcohol.
  •  Your employment and military (if applicable) histories must demonstrate the motivation and success orientation needed to succeed as a Police Officer.
  •  Your financial and driving records must demonstrate responsible decisions and appropriate behavior.
