This position traditionally starts at an annual salary of $41,574. Salary for this position may be commensurate with education and job experience.


About the Job:

The Program Director leads the development, administration, and evaluation of the Cancer Surveillance Section at the Indiana State Department of Health, including all programs included within the Section. The Cancer Surveillance Section Director serves as the resident expert and public health specialist for cancer surveillance initiatives (including the federal and state mandated Indiana State Cancer Registry, pediatric cancer surveillance, and Indiana cancer cluster response) at the Indiana State Department of Health. The Director provides leadership and management for all Cancer Surveillance Section state and contracted staff, ensuring that the team meets its specified goals and objectives while satisfying requirements of associated state and federal funding sources.Incumbent will oversee the Indiana State Cancer Registry.


A Day in the Life:

The essential functions of this roles are as follows:

  • Direct development of Cancer Surveillance Section grant proposals for federal or other external funding, including applications for renewal of grant funds and applications for new funding opportunities
  • Manage all grants and cooperative agreements acquired through the Cancer Surveillance Section – includes ensuring timely and successful interim and annual reports for several federal grants/cooperative agreements
  • Coordinate with Indiana communities and community organizations in responding to funding opportunities that would support local public health initiatives in cancer surveillance
  • Direct operations and state and federal budgets for the Section, formulating and establishing all policies and procedures related to the Section and maintaining a broad knowledge of accounting and budget principles
  • Serve as Supervisor for multiple state and contracted staff for the Cancer Surveillance Section and work closley with the Indiana Office of Technology Compliance to oversee programmers assigned to the Indiana Cancer Registry.
  • Direct evaluation of all programs and initiatives within the Cancer Surveillance Section
  • Act as agency technical expert on matters related tocancer surveillance public health essential services; serve on task forces, committees, and advisory councils related to cancer surveillance as per request by the State Health Commissioner and Chronic Disease Director; Serve as liaison between agency and other state agencies, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, and external partners on all matters related to cancer surveillance
  • Design and implement workplans and strategic changes to programs within the Cancer Surveillance Section, and review recommendations for changes made by Section staff members.
  • Establish Section-wide goals, priorities, and methodology while maintianing extensive knowledge of all program/initiatives within the Cancer Surveillance Section, extensive knowledge of all federal and state policies and references related to cancer surveillance, and extensive knowledge of the agency and other partners dealing with Section programs or initiatives.

  • Maintain effective working relationships with federal, state, and local agencies, medical and health organizations, community groups and associations, and other stakeholders
  • Daily activities and management of a state health department program area
  • Chronic disease public health efforts, particularly those involving policy initiatives, systems-level changes, and environmental change
  • Organizational knowledge of local, state and national agencies addressing the topic of cancer surveillance, inlcuding but not limited to the Indiana State Cancer Registry, the North American Association of Central Cancer Registries (NAACR).
  • Principles of accounting and budgets, especially in relation to federal cooperative agreements

This role provides direct supervision for one or more staff members.
