Director of Research – IT – UNC-Chapel Hill – Chapel Hill, NC

The Director of Research IT at the UNC School of Medicine (SOM) will play a critical leadership role in implementing innovative technologies, data, and analytics to advance the clinical and basic science research missions of the university with a goal of strengthening and supporting SOM research. The Director of Research IT will be responsible for setting a vision and practical action plan to create, operate and continually evolve a technology infrastructure that can support the wide scope of inquiry, data acquisition, and healthcare research performed at UNC. The scope of this position covers research IT for the entire School of Medicine, and requires close partnership with UNC Health Care to ensure compatibility of systems, procedures, and security. The position serves as a fulcrum among a broad array of internal stakeholders, external research collaborators, and industry partners, both within and beyond the walls of the University. It is important that this individual creates and maintains strong partnerships with technical and non-technical individuals, clinical and basic science faculty, government organizations, and leadership across a diverse array of personages and interests. All forms of effective communication are required for this role, and he or she will be expected to communicate effectively and persuasively with decision-makers in order to move the organization forward. Reporting to the CIO, the Director of Research IT will be a leader in helping define, evolve, and implement the School of Medicine’s research technology infrastructure. This individual will serve as the SOM’s representative on a variety of research initiatives, coordinating the IT organization’s response to faculty investigators’ informatics and technology infrastructure needs. The Director of Research IT will translate research needs into actionable projects, and will work with the Research and IT communities to prioritize, staff and implement those projects.
