Job Description Summary:
The University of Kansas Medical Center (KUMC) animal resources are comprised of ~100,000 gross assigned sq. ft. in 4 buildings located on the KUMC campus in Kansas City, KS. The entire centralized animal care program at KUMC was fully accredited by the Association for Accreditation and Assessment of Laboratory Animal Care International (AAALAC) in 1992 and has maintained its accreditation since that time. Laboratory Animal Resources has grown to employ 35 persons and provide services for over 100 investigators and 500 research staff. Under Team Leader supervision, performs routine husbandry, janitorial, and cage cleaning procedures related to the care and use of laboratory animals. The incumbent will perform other duties as assigned by Laboratory Animal Resources (LAR) management, including veterinarian.

Work Hours: 7:00 am – 3:30 pm

Job Description:
Required Qualifications:
Education : High School Diploma or GED

Work Experience : 3-5 years of relevant work experience – May substitute for education.

Skills : Must be able and willing to work weekends and holidays. Ability to lift 50 pounds. Ability to wear personal protective equipment, including a respirator. Ability to follow written and verbal instructions. Ability to learn and apply new standard operating procedures and policies. Basic computer skills. Should provide three professional references including one from direct supervisor.

Job Duties Outlined:
35% – Husbandry Duties: Conduct animal health observations. Complete animal care assignments according to standard operating procedures. Feed and waters animals. Receive and identifies animals using appropriate methods. Handle and restrains animals. Wean animals. Monitor environmental parameters. Record information on the cage cards and checksheets. Complete forms and sends email notifications to investigators. Submit cage orders.

30% – Janitorial Duties: Operates mechanical cleaning equipment. Maintains supply inventory and requests replacements as necessary. Disinfects animal rooms and support areas. Organizes and cleans storage areas. Follows established health and safety procedures. Follows facility security and traffic flow procedures.

25% – Cage Washroom: Duties Completes cage wash assignments according to standard operating procedures. Operates and maintains cage washers, autoclaves, and sanitizing equipment. Maintains adequate levels of cage wash chemicals. Scrapes and empties pans and cages of soiled bedding. Pre-cleans large animal racks for cage wash machinery. Washes caging equipment and autoclaves food, bedding, water bottles, nestlets, and appropriate covering. Prepares cage orders for LAR staff and researchers. Maintains detailed records of preventive maintenance schedules, detergent and disinfectant use, cage washer and autoclave performance tests. Performs preventative maintenance on autoclaves, cage/rack washers, and other equipment. Disposes of waste materials. Sweeps, mops and disinfects cage wash area at the end of the shift. Receives and stocks feed, bedding, and other supplies in the storage area. Performs scheduled decontaminations in cage wash areas. Cleans and organizes storage areas. Conducts minor equipment and caging repairs.

10% – Perform other duties as assigned.
