Medical Technologist-Generalist – West Virginia University Hospital – Morgantown, WV

Performs clinical

laboratory tests in at least two laboratory divisions (e.g., Blood Bank,

Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, or Molecular) by standard operating

policies and procedures, understands method principles, performs quality

control, performs preventative maintenance, and analyzes results as to

accuracy, acceptability and critical limits. The generalist works

independently in consultation and under the guidance of the Medical Director

and supervisory personnel, organizing work to meet established deadlines and

records all data obtained.

MINIMUM

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1.

Bachelor

of Science degree in Medical Technology/Medical Laboratory Science.

2.

OR Bachelor of

Science degree in a related science such as Microbiology, Biology, or

Chemistry AND one year pertinent

full-time experience or training in a clinical laboratory setting.

3.

OR Associates

Degree as Medical Laboratory Technician with Bachelors Degree and

certification as a Medical Technologist (Medical Laboratory Scientist).

4.

Licensed

as a Laboratory Technician in the state of West Virginia within 90 days of

employment.

PREFERRED

QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
1.

Certification as a Medical

Technologist by the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or

American Medical Technologists (AMT) preferred.

2.

Licensed

as a Laboratory Technologist in the state of West Virginia within 30 days of

employment

CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: The

Accepts and promptly prepares patient

specimens in order to perform and analyze, in an efficient manner, basic diagnostic

procedures designed to produce accurate reproducible results to meet the

needs of patients, as requested by the medical staff.

Follows standard operating procedures (SOP)

developed to produce accurate reproducible results.

3.

Operates laboratory equipment/instrumentation

consistent with standard operating procedures and manufacturer’s instruction

manuals.

4.

Prepares

reagents, solutions and/or therapeutic products and restocks as required to complete

necessary testing/requests according to the SOP, (e.g., daily review of

results and quality control records).

5.

Maintains

all records accurately, neatly and legibly in ink (unless otherwise

required), (e.g., worksheets, chart reports).

6.

Performs

required quality assurance and quality control procedures on a predetermined

schedule to ascertain the reliability of reagents and laboratory

equipment/instrumentation in order to assure timely accurate reproducible

test results insuring quality patient care.

7.

Performs

routine maintenance, calibrations and quality control of laboratory

equipment/instrumentation as directed by the laboratory SOP within the

predetermined time schedule, recognizing errors, responding in an appropriate

manner and documenting completion.

8.

Recognizes

basic instrument malfunctions and performs minor troubleshooting and aids in

appropriate problem resolution, in a timely manner.

9.

Participates,

as required, in proficiency testing/interpretation/reporting using established

procedures.

10.

Requests

input and direction, as needed, from the Medical Director(s) or Technical

Specialists regarding medical, technical, quality assurance, and quality

control problems.

11.

Utilizes time,

materials and resources in an economical manner, prioritizing laboratory

requests by arranging workload to provide for optimal patient care and

efficiency.

12.

Completes

assigned workload within established turnaround times by flexing organization

of work according to test ordering status (e.g., routine, STAT, ASAP,

emergency),

13.

Maintains

effective communication with laboratory divisions and sections, other

hospital departments and patients/public, as necessary, to assure

dissemination of information and the identification/resolution of problems in

support of the hospital’s mission of patient care.

14.

Effectively

and in a timely manner communicates laboratory test results to the health

care team.

15.

Effectively

communicates in a timely manner any unusual supply usage or critical supply

levels to the supervisor to expedite ordering of required supplies for the

continual service needs of patients.

16.

Participates

in the educational endeavors of the institution to meet the current and

future needs of the hospital, laboratory and the university in support of the

hospital’s mission of patient care, teaching, and research.

17.

Participates,

as required, in the training, supervision and evaluation of new employees, as

established by laboratory policies (e.g., section training checklist).

18.

Participates

in the technical and theoretical instruction, supervision and evaluation of

residents and students of the School of Medicine and other health care

professionals as established by laboratory policies (e.g., laboratory

objectives, evaluation forms).
